FRIARS VS. GOPHERS ON TURKEY DAY
rSEC:l TO THE TIMES! EITI.0, IXD.. Nov. 2 3 A football same which in all probability will be written in the sporting- annals as one of the greatest exhibitions of the gridiron game will be played on Thanksgiving day on Forsyth field located at the corner of Sheffield ave. and Indiana Elvd., at 2 p. m. The atrong East Chicago Gophers, for the past three seasons, northern Indiana middleweight champions, will furnish the opposition for the local Friar eleven
Curing the r.ist eight years of football the Gophers have hung up the enviable record -f .1 vvin. 4 defeats ami one tie game, one of their oereats came early this year, when the Cornell A. C of Chicago, put over a 1:1-7 win. With the few regulars and the subs who particpated in the Crown Point game going through the fracas with no serious injuries, Coach Hart of the Friars will be able to present his strongest lineup when the starting whistle blows. Cross and Bond who have been nursing lame shoulders since the Valparaiso game, mo again in the best, of condition as is r.e scrappy little guard. M. O'Fatt. who has been out of the game on account of a bad ankle. The Friars at present is the only undefeated rrTMVwe!ght team in this region. In seven starts they have chalked up six wins and one tie game. From the pep displayed in the Friars camp this past week the Gophers will have tr.ore than they can handle and ara in for another bebating. "Word has come from F.ast Chicago that the Gophers hold the Friars in high esteem and are holding a fear that they will be the loser of Lake county's greatest classic in the n-iar-Gopher game. A number of college stars have been imported to bolster up their scjuati and it is figured they will go heavily irf debt to keep their ancient rivals from putting over a win.
Scatenas In Action.
The Karamond Scater.as will Jump into action Thankag'.ving day at the high achool field. The opposing team will be the Englewood Cresents who were supposed to have played here last Saturday. The Crescents will come to town Thursdays with a lineup of stars from various colleges of the Mid-West. They have former players from Iyola, Del'aul .hake Forest and IePauw. They have wen all of their games this year in the cup ri.ee and will push the Scatenas to all the football they know. The Scatenas have been practicing faithfully for this gam - an 1 especially for the East Chicago Gopher ;ame Sunday at East Chicago. " The Scatenas must win both ct these frames before they hook up with the Pullman A. C. in Chicago for fhe championship of the Mid-Yo:st League. Thrc. has
been a decided imnrrtveent in the
team work of the Scatenas) as they have put more vigor and pep in their practice. , Thurnday's game will be an adied attiaetion to the people of Hammond as the Crescents are coming out here with the intention of running Into sot. 10 crapes. The Scatenas have realized the ndv.mtag of over-confidence and will be out to add another scalp to their belt. Pon t forget the big pep dance Saturday night before the game at the Ofpheum hall. Gleascn Field to be Scene of
Memorable Struggle Tomorrow Afternoon BT SPIKE. Gleason Field In 'Gary, considered one of tho finest athletic enclosures in the middle west, will he the scene of a bitter pigskin struggle tomorrow afternoon. Thanksgiving Day. that will go down Into the annals of football history of this district. Lined up at battle will be th noted Hammond Professionals under the ownership of "Doc" Alva Toung ana the crack Gary Klks all stars under the managership of Ernie Bayton. Gary sport king, and Jack Gllroy. athletic director of the Gary school system . Ancient rivals In the past, Gary and Hammond will clash for the s teenth time tomorrow afternoon to determine the professional gridiron supremacy of the state and part of the middle west. Old timers will recall the bitter football games of the years gone by and there is little question but what tomorrow's clash will outrival those that have gone down in history. There are but a few but what would miss their turkey feed for it. Those who remeber last year's game, saw Gary slip ever a forward perfectly manipulated forward pass and win the game in the lart few minutes of play after Hammond had the game practically sewed up S-? having scored a place kick earlier in the fray. Hammond still remembers this defeat and say they are goin to fight all the harder to regain the lost laurels. According to .lopstcrs, Hammond and the Elks will go into tho game almost on even t'-'ims. Hammond has lost but two battles this season and these two were administered by two of the best professional aggregations In the professional ranks. The Priscl Cardinals .snatched a victory away from the Hammondi tea by one touchdown while the Green Bay Packers slipped over a win with a 14-3 score after plugging up their lin-. On the other hand G-ry h.3s lost but ono game this fall. Gary had on off day that Sunday and let the Amos A. A. aggregation of Chicago slide home wtih a 14-7 score. Up until this g-ame Gary led tho Chicago Mid-West league, defeating the tcp-notchers of the clr cuit who had trimmed the Amos A. A. bunch by big scores. They refused to give the Elks a return game under any conditions. Both Hammond and Gary have trained hard for the Turkey Day fray and' up to this hour both camps are confident of slipping over a victory Hammond has a coteie of famed football tsars who rank high in the middle western professional fame this season having held the Canton Bulldogs 7-7 and considered the strongeat team in the Ohio State. While, the Elks have not hooked up with the hXfhly reputed teams that Hammond has this season they have rimmed the best of tho Chicago midwest league and seek new laurels when they try to take Hammond tomorrow. Much of thei.- future depends up their sh-.wing against their eld rivals tomorrow.
