IN LAKE CO. 1

tuberculosis caused thtrty-lUe deat'as last year In Gary alone ami 107 in LaJ.c count. Recently there were nine in one month. Evry unattended dath from this ri eajo is said to mean 10 new infections. There are probably 45o active iae In the county, and about 4u0 lnotlr. which may develop at any time, ducb conditions as we are facing at present are trolng; to develop some of them. Much excellent public w ork is

uone in ixLXe county, but tuberculosis Is one thing- that is not yet adequately provided for. There is a cminty tuberculosis society, a, volunteer orrnlatloa ol unselfish, disinterested psopla. The society Is at present employing two workers, an executive and a public health nurse. The nurse. Mrs. Blvlns, who has had excellent training and wide experience. Including service over -"es. Is caring for as many cases as she can. Just now she has 115 on her

jrvunate in neingr entirely new. Dotibtloiss there are a good many unsanitary outhouses sua 'in use throughout the county perhaps even in the cities. The

time is near at hand when these will

-anouier excellent thing for the resl-

mere is a movement on foot, we believe, to supply milk at a special low

price to needy families; nothing could be finer than that, at such a time. A supply of good milk will go far toward fumlshln the needed elements in an

uinerwISe greatly reduced diet. In fact some very interesting experiments are being conducted right now to show to

wnat extent It is possible for healthy

aamis to depend on milk as a food.

In spite of such admirable conditions Gary has not the best possible reputa

tion for health. Possibly owing to in

uuoLriai reasons, and possibly to in

adequate safe guarding there is a good , . i . . . . ,

vl luuercuiosis in proportion to

the population and to other diseases.

.-men scientinc study is being given

to the relation of this disease to in

oustry; some occupations help the T. B. germ to prosper, and science has riot yet overcome thi3 obstacle. But

that is one reason the more why careful work is needed in attending to patients and protecting those associated with them. Tuberculosis prevention must po on and must be done more thoroughly in Gary and in Lake county, if the fight against this plague is to hold its own and to make progress. Deaths from this source are being reduced, but not fast enough. And too many new infections are starting. Sitting by the T. M. C. A. magazine tble was a man who coughed every -ow and then, as he read. He did not cover his mouth with cither hand or handkerchief. Tie coughed directly Into the magazine. If only it's pages had been under a microscope, so that he could have seen the droplets conveyed from his month and nose. And the germs inhabiting them. The thought was enough to make other readers hesitate to use the magazines. Of course the handkerchief is best to uje, as the hand goes right on touching

other things. But even to cover the ough and collect the moisture in the hands is better than spraying it about into the air and upon surrounding objects. Most coughing Is unnecessary anyhow. People who sit in an audience and couch become silent as soon as they become interested. Just a bad habit; -why not control it?
