Barnard was born in Macnenoire, France, in li35 and enlisted in the Belgian infantry August 4. 1914. Later he gave up his rank in the infantry to offer his services as pilot of a Belgan airplane. In this ilne he won honors for his daring and bravery. On the night of Aug. 29. 1919 he brought down two German planes and a dirigible with twenty-eight officers' on biard. Six weeks later when he. made another attack he was surrounded by seven German p'.anes and severely wounded. He was captured and spent twelve months in a prison.
