First English in Newfoundland. In 1853 an English colonizing expedition waa led to Newfoundland by that chivalrous navigator. Sir Humphrey Gilbert, who belonged to that group of enterprlsin- and patriotic men whose names shine forth in the 'history of the reign of Queen Elizabeth. He was a half-brother of the gallant but Illfated Sir Walter Raleigh.
