One eritio of it Kuffitlo iuner acclaims 'Hiams as "the greatest football plaj.r of the age." The colored athlete ho stirred with Brown University in 1920. la described hy another New York pajer as having: the "nirfd of an ante-lane and the strength of a tiKtr." Tha paper at Buffalo admit thefr texm waa inoky to win and that the 17 to 0 score does not represent the oiinriarative strength of the clubs M ith Oliphant, the famous army play, ti. and an All-Arm riean lineup HnfTal-i coull not huda the Hammond line hut won because Tr. Young's back field t't the worst of the hreaks and could not keep up with its own line. To quote one Buffalo paper: "It if perhaps just as veil fr the HufTal" .Al-Anu-riean football team that it did not draw Hammond or its first yame instead of MeKeenport. Without Oliphant. ami i.ott yesterday' same might have had a different eniilnr." "Hammond's dtisky ?tar, Ink Williams. -s the greatest thins: eer s" n hereabouts in football tos," said another paper. "N'othmp ot around his end throughout the game. He dropped Oliphant dead in his tracks an1 cvfn intercepted plays on the other end of the line. He lb greased lightning." I'r. Wfst Hammond will .see lt flrat football game Sunday, when the Maroons of that city tackle the fast Gary Cardinals at the West Hammond baseball park. The Cardinals have a wonderful team romp 'sed of graduates from both Kmerimi and Froebe! lush schools, ami are couched by one of the best football mentors in Cary. The team has played three games and has won two, losing one to the stion.-. Indinna Harbor Kagleii who ran a score of 13-6. Although outweighed thirty pounds to a man in their clash with the Kagles they performed brilliantly holdinn their heavy opponents when in scoring distance. The Maroon eleven lost their ojn-ning game Hnnduy lo the Whiting Filar by 14-0. All of the Kriar points were made id the first quartet. After tiiat they played the m-mo team off their feet, both were unable to cross tbe opponents goal. With numerous glaring faults brought to light in its defeat by Whiting last Sunday Coach Kbert of the Maroons put the squad through a grilling practice session yesterday to get in shape for the coming Cardinal game. Four tackling especialy in the open field and failure of the front Iin-- te hold enabled the Friars to put over their only scores of the game in tipfirst quarter. Coach Kbert concentrated his efforts on correcting those faults first. Scrimmage took up most of the practice session, and Kbt rt showed the line men how to play their position to prevent the Cardinals of Gary from breaking through Sunday. The front Lr.e was alos instructed in r'aking holes iii the opposing line so the backfielii men can tret through, and in outcharging their opponents. The line showd considerable improvement at the end of the practice session. Coach Kbert has some wonderful material und with a few more stars to be added in Sunday s game the team ought to fight on even terms w ith the riteel City eleven.
