SOTTH BEND, Ind., September 30. An address by William Wirt, of Gary, wa a feature of a ewion of the annual meeting- of the Northwest Indiana conference ti the Methodist Kpiscopal church which opened here Tuesday evening. Mr. Wirt discussing religious education, presented charts to show that a modern school could be so planned ihat ft would be possible to add both religious and physical training to the curriculum with an eijfht hour day for the pupil of study, recreation and religion, all under the supervision of teachers. THE CHRISTIE SPIRIT Referring- to the coming conference on disarmament, which Is to open at Washington. November 11, M. M. Eng. lish, of Oak Park, 111., said: "International council Mice the coming- conference on limitation or armament, need the impact of the Christian spirit In order that the natural rights and desires of the nations may toe brought in line with the moral purposes of God. Without it nothing permnent can come from the conference to save the world from itself, restore the lost prestige of the white ra.ee and direct the rising tide of color on very continent." Dr. U. li. Lcazenby of Chile, told of the work of the church in South and CentraJ America. He said the constructive purposes of the centenary movement had enlarged the foreign field of missions. South American mission stations are enjoying prosperity, he added, and he told of plans for the establishment of a mission settlement in southern Chile. The Rev. Frederick F. Shannon, of Chicago, also spoke, discussing "The Modern Man." REPORTS TO COM'KHEXCE Reports were made today by the district superintendent. Demetrius It. TUlison. of Crowfordville; W. W". I Swltier of Greencastle; K. K. Dough- j ertyt of Lafayette, and W. E.McKenzie.1 of South Bend. Thousands of occes-J sions to the church twk place during!

the winter months as the result of the evangelistic servjees. Despite wage cuts the amounts suii.-ersbed to -benevolence showed no appreciable descrca.se. Several new churches were built in the conference during the year and extensive improaements in church equip

ment were made in many iommunities. Pastors' salaries generally were increased during the year. The women's organisations of the church, including the auxiliaries and the home and foreign missionary societies, have gained substantially in membership. The anni versarie.o of various women's societies were celebrated at the tfternoon session.

CAMPAIGN TO

STOP RECKLESS

AUTO DRIVING

The general indignation over reckless automobile driving in thi. community, as well as in cither sections of the state has led to the inauguration of a determined campaign for impressing the need of caution on all drivers of motor vehicles. The Hoosier State Auto Association, which takes the lead in this campaign, as well as in the other work benefitting motorists and the public alike, has urged that city officials and civic organizations everywhere in Indiana unite in conducting h "safety week" or a longer period, during which time every effort shall be made to impress the need for caution on all operators of motor vehicles. In Indianapolis the board of public safety is now launched on a safety week crusade, incorporating also a

brake test campuign conducted by the traffic department according to specifications laid down by Chester A. Kicker, technical representative of the llocg ler State Auto Association and Indiana, representative of the American Automobile Asociation. In addition, the Marion County comcissioners. and the Hoosier Motor Ciub are co-operating in a survey of Indianapolis and Marion county to determine where motoring hazards exist and as yet unmarked by any danger signt. It is asked that all danger spots, the had curves or bad hills, ditches, ets., be reported and all shrubbery which obscures turn or turns will be cut down by the commission' rs who wi';l also se that bridge rails are painted white and that proper guard railings are planed where necessary. A similar survey is being made in Lake county under the aus-pices of the Lake County Motor Club, a branch of the state as.ociati"n. A recent ruling by the ftate board of accounts say that county commissioners in Indiana may use a rc-ason-ahle sum in this safety 'V'1 on all motor routes, railroad eros:figs, etc.. and may erect such signs as are deemed necessary. It is the hope of officials of the Hoosier State Auto Association that civic organizations in every county in the state may take up a similar campaign with their pol.ee officials and county commissioners. "The matter of erecting danger signs 's generally left up to the Hoosier .State Auto Association." states Secretary Noblet. 'and wp have carried on this work in an extensive manner this summer. Had we greater co-op?ration in the way of membership support by motorists generally we could achieve much more work on these lines, as we have no funds excepting through membership fees. Our aim is to make the motoring conditions as nearly ideal as possible, and we need to at least double our present membership if we are to finance anything like the requirements of a state-wide danger sign campaign.
