Former Mayor Callahan in his talk which wn enthusiastically received discussed the tax question, declaring it to be the most vital question of the day. He told how the city government can he operated efficiently and economically. The interest In Mr. Callahan's speech was shown by frequent applause.

VINCENNES, Ind., Sept. 22. Vincennes was host today for the annual convention of the Municipal League of Indiana, which opened a three-days session here. Many delegates and their wives arrived early. Registration and entertainment features were on the program for the first ?day. Business Mssions will btin Thursday. William F. Hodges, mayor of Gary and president of the association, formally opened th convention in the city council chamber at 10 a. m. America" was sung, and the Rev. U. C. mayor of Columbus, responded for the delegates. An orchestra played several selections, and Miss Anna C. O'Flynn, of Vincennes. described briefly each place of historical interest which the delegates were to visit in an automobile following the first session.

INTERNATIONAL NEWS SERVICE WINNIPEG. Sept. 22. John Rutledge of Inniefall, Alberta, Is under sentence of death today after conviction by a Jury at Reed Deer, of the murder of his
wife and five of his children. The trial climaxed one of the W extern Canada'a strangest crimes. On June .22. 1921, fire destroyed the Rutledge home and the charred "bodies of Mrs. Rutledge and the five children were found in the embers, Rutledge
himself was badly burned. His story nf th. fir did not satisfy the authori
ties and they began an Investigation. Changes of murder were lodged against Rutledge when vldenc wu
discovered taht Mrs. Rutledge and her husband had quarreled over Rutledge's alleged attentions to his sister-in-law. Evidence Introduced at the trial, was to the effect that, after many violent quarrels. Rutledge and his wife entered Into a auicida pact. Rutledge wu said to iave chrbbed his children Into

Alleging that life was unbearable with her husband on account of his many ideas concerning religion. Hazel Lillian "White has filed suit for divorce in the Gary Lake Superior Court. Hsj- complaint charges that her hus
band neglected his business and became a "religious fanatic." Mr. White owned the White Tranjfer Company. She saya that he Joined the Salvation Army soon after their marriage, and would bring members of that organization to his home; that he .would not allow her to read the papers, but would tell her to read the Bible. She further avers that he would shout and pray for the salvation of his wife's soul, and would plajr religious pieces on their victrola. Her petition states that she eminded him that he was neglecting hli business and tha children, and he told her that "the Lord will take cara cf the children." Defendant's address te given as 709 Adams street. She says that all of tha above became unbearable. She states that defendant, on July 8, 1921, deserted her.
GARY WOMAN SUES FOR DIVORCE
CSfEClAl. TO THE TlWtl CROWN POINT. Ind., Sept. 22. Maria Hanton hasbegun divorce proceedings against herthusband Jake, whom she married in 1908 in the state of Wisconsin. The defendant is adrdlcted to the excessive use of alcohol which makes him wild and vicious. Mrs. Hanton alleges that she was compelled to work during a greater part of their married life and that her husband accused her of Infidelity. She works at the American Sheet & Tin Plate Co. in Gary. The Hantons have three children and live at 120Q Washington street, Crftry. Attorney Samuel P. Schorr filed the complaint.

Hunter, British amateur golf champion, playing a lone hand for Great Britain in tha American National Amateur Oolf Championship, was fighting hard against Bobby Jones of Atlanta, one of the finest home breds ever developed in the United States, in the third round today. round but the margin was by no means a winning one. especially as Hunter appeared on the late morning holes to have overcome nervousness apparent when he. started. He was fighting Jones shot for shot.
Chick Kvans, the champion, led Jesse Sweetser of New York, two holes at tha end of the morning round, while Jesse Guilford, the Massachusetts champion, had but one hole advantage over Harrison Johnston of St. Paul, th Minnesota champion. Bob Gardner of Chicago, was 3 up on Ruddy Inepper of Sioux City. Kne-pper weakened on the last nine holes, taking 44 and allowing Gardner to amass a fairly formidable lead.

Elan Big Meeting at Riley, School Grounds Next Saturday. The biff guns of the Citizens Party wll be Tinhooded and the formal opening of the fall campaign started next Saturday evening at the Riley aehool grounds, 138th and Elm streets Indiana Harbor. This is one of the events that people of the Twin Cities have been looking forward to gaining a correct and clearer conception of the political situation in the city of East Chicago. A full speaking program is scheduled this to be preceded by a concert by the Citlaeas' band.
