HOW THEY HATE US! According to some correspondents at Geneva, America was "sever so thoroughly hated" by the people of Kurope, both former companions in arms and former foes. This hostility is attributed' to our refusal to tie ourselves up to the League of Nations. The League admittedly is far from an entire success and thcise correspondents say America is blamed for its failure. They hate us, eh? Well, let us see. The other day the French government, through a cabinet minister, expressed its gratitude to the women of America for their inestimable services in the reconstruction of homes destroyed by the German invaders. France will never forget, he sail, the debt it owes to America and especially to its women who hare given so freely, not only of their money, but of their time and energy and peculiar sympathetic talents to the restoration of the homes of the poor peasants. One American women restored an entire town, including not only the dwellings but the public buildings. Anne Morgan supervised the activities of an association which Jias accomplished wonders in the devastated districts. A delegation of members of the American Legion has just returned from a three weeks' tour of France and Belgium and its corataander reports that Its welcome everywhere was "unapproached by any reception in these nations ever before accorded a party of unofficial visitors from a foreign country." Throughout their brief trip they were overwhelmed with kindness from their enthusiastic hosts. Everywhere they were recognized aa representatives of the force that saved Europe for civilization. lhe peoples of Faane and Belgium could not do too much for them. And Russia? The people there, who are being rescued from the famine which resulted from the bolshevik tyranny and misrule do not exactly hate the agents of the American relief administrations.
Uiniug saloon have a combined length of 250 feet. There are suites comprising bedrooms, living room, private dining room and Bun parlor a veritable fur'nished flat at a price for the seven-day voyage that would no doubt, astonish even a New York .landlord. .There is a "street" of fashionable shops for passengers particularly feminine ones who do not know how to get rid of their money. There are tennis courts, a moving picture theater, a swimming pool, a gymnasium and even a golf course.. While a great many words are used to emphasize the conveniences, there is nothing said of the thing that so many persons just now are most interested in the rates. Hotel prices are coming down, but when is ocean travel going to become less expensive? Steerage accomodations cost more today than first cabin did a few years ago. The rates today are prohibitive for certain classes of persons, such as teachers and clergymen, who used to go abroad every year or two. Many former tourists wculd be satisfied to travel on boats that did not possess all the latest luxuries and conveniences if accomodations could be provided at reasonable rates. Certain lines are complaining of a lack pf patronage. A fleet of moderate priced "one cabin" boats might solve their problem.
THE HIGH COST OF VOYAGING. Dispatches from Hamburg say the most conspicuous object in that city, one that can be seen for miles around is a huge new ocean steamship which i3 nearing completion for an American line. It is, of course, "the largest in the world." A description of this "floating palace" is couched in superlatives. The vessel is the last word in luxury a? well as in size. The ceiling of the restaurant is f.O feet high. This apartment and a connecting grand
NOT BRITAIN'S LOSS ALONE. England is concerned about the future of her historic places. Not only are the owners of some famous estates unable longer to maintain them and they are destined to go on the market, but Runnymede, the place where the barons put the thumbscrews on King John over 700 years ago and compelled him to sign Magna Charta was recently advertised for sale and brougth no bidders. However, the latter situution Is explained to have been due to it not having been known that It waa the historic meadew that was offered. Since then it has been withdrawn from the market. In Britain a rich man may be poor, poor in hav
ing too much property. With the taxes entailed by the war maintenance of property is proving too much cf a burden to be endured and many places made famous by great events In the" island's story may be hawked about to find a buyer. Since they may prove too expensive to maintain purely for historic associations many are likely to lose their present character in being diverted to practical use. A castle may have a wealth of history and tradition surrounding it, but if it does not pay for its upkeep, and the owner is short of funds, material considerations may dictate Its alteratioa or razing. Britain's 2,000 years of history have given many sites importance in the record of events. It may be desirable to retain them, but there is such a thing as being too rich in the possession of them and too poor to keep them. Yet, should the British permit famous buildings to be removed and historic sites to be forgotten no small part of the attraction which the island presents to Americans especially will pass away. We have not been in existence as a nation long enough to have many shrines. Britain is rich in them and they draw many American visitors. England modernized will not be the charming place that England -with piles dating back to the Tudors, the Plantagenets or the Normans Is. Therefore it is tobe hoped that the present strain on owners will not continue to the point of obliterating many of the historic places. That would not be a British loss alone.

CHATS WITH YOUR Gas Man Home comfort is as typically; jAmerican as the Statue of Liberty. No other people in tbe world have so many domestic; conveniences. ! Foreigners marvel at tke, things which American housekeepers take for granted central heating system, , gasequipped kitchens, instantane-( ous not water supply in shining white bathrooms. They re-, gard these things as luxuries for; the very rich. Americans accept them as a matter of course ; without thought of where they ; come from, or why. Yet the' story of their development ia!, not an old one. The gas stove, for ecrample, has been practical only since 1880. Ita evolution from itaj crude beginning to the efficient,1 economical appliance of today, is a marvel; 45,000,000 people! in 4,600 American communities; depend upon it for the preparation of food. This has been ac-, complished by careful study; : and experimentation by gas ex-' perts to meet the public need.' Just think for a moment:; what would you do without it?
