At a time when the fallacy cf theoretical curealls for Industrial ills is being shown, there remains one out-standing t.i.vt It la j. ou totn ia t e-:n-hoaies ail the good features of the bonus and proiitsharing plans witu ncce of the ills. It is tiie j.uiiey of selling shares of slock to erupioyea on tho installuicct plan. Kor more than three and a hilt years Swirr & Company has been telling the story of thu p:e'.vi.J-T industry and its company in a series of advert i.-e-meuts. The moL-i striking of these is one now ;!;- pearing in the neswpapers which sfc .' the Siiecess of the policy cf selling stock to ?iapln; . f s. !ore than 21,000 employes of Swift & Compai'y own or are paying for shares in the business. The ir holdings represent $24,500,000. These 21,000" employes not only have an interest in th business but they paid for that interest and therefore do net hold it lightly. It is earned 'increment. They realize on the profits of the- company aa well as participating in the weekly pavro'l. It represents practical and tensible progress in the relaticna of capital and labor by uniting them in the, same cause. Swift & Company have the right iden. Their mutuality plan is a corking good way to hit bolsLevism right in the snout.
lcdy, either private citizens or oSieerb of the law, felt tailed upon to take any action against those who all at i.iic-? are denounced us violators of Ine statutes. Sometimes IL takes a blaze of lightning t- bring into fuli relief the si'gnificauce of conditions which had been observed many times. This a p .-. irs to be one of them . At all even's there is mar.ife.-tod a purpose to go to the bet torn of the booze parties and enforce the prohibition law as it has not been enforced before. In S.tn Francisco an j'tttuipt has been made to extract from the central figure of tho Arbuekle party a vtatetiu-nt ;is to whence came the liquor that led to the ti agedy. Xcili'.ng carae of it. A curious public spread all over the country will watch eagerly for the next move. The ill; gal liquor traffic is business of such a character that there can bo very little secrecy about it. It would not be profitable were not a groat n;an pcurde cognizant of all its details. A determined public offhvr she uld have no difficulty in gi tt:ng all the information n-tiui die to bringing the principal offenders to the bar of iustiee. Certainly where there a re so many fully inform. d about the illicit trad.: as in San Fraaoist'o and Los Angeles the gathering of evidence should be simple. It Is not tc be expected that the sending of a dozen or a hundred violators of the prohibition law to prison will put r stop to illegal practices. Hut. It unquestionably would make the business so risky that the numbers engaging in it wctibi bo apnreciabiy reduced and the traffic would be minimized. Making li'juor hard:-r to get will not, of course, improve the morals of any people, nut tr will prove a check r.n vicious practices of which the Arbuckle patty in San Francisco was a glarirg example. We mwrhi say that ii ihe prohibition officers would work bard for a little wliil" In pt-rfernance of their rlutv fhdr tasks in 'ut'iro would be f asior. On reflection, how ever, we comiuile that their jobs could not. be easier than they have been, judging from the lack of results obtained.

UNLOVELY SCENERY. A larg part of the American people, helped by the motor car, now travels for pleasure on the highways. Their pleasure comes from motion, fresh r.ir and Bt-enry and the last pf these is not the l?nst. The open country, the skies, the hills, the woods and the fields, are full of charm for the city matt, business and professional. He enjoys them. But business has somewhat overdone enterprise by securing especially beautiful spots where tourists are wont to linger, and marring them by huge signs, which obtrude disagreeably upon otherwise enchanting views. This is an offence agairst the ethics cf advertising, because lnsteau of extracting trade it creates a distinct prejudice against the advertiser and his goods. They are abundant places and opportunities for sign beards where they do not rob the passerby of pleasure to which he is entitled. The country highways are no place for them. As a matter of coll fact the advertising columns of legitimate publications are the one place where the advertis?r may get the prospective customer without alienating his good will. ft Is a strange thing, a curious def ;ct in the psychology of many merchants, that they conceive their business announcements suitable in any locality. They have been seen on the little envelopes in rhurch used for contributions envelope.? furnished "without charge," except the profanation of the temple to week-day business purposes! says an exchange.
1H spite seme remarkable records in the past, it is certain that the. rt: ,h to college this year will be greater than ever bi fore. V7'on increased tuition and :.ving costs in coi'ote towns as a result of this crowding are no bar to the great crowd clamoring for a relieve education.' In the si hools in which it was decided to n sort to shifter entrance examinations to keep down the enrollment even this has failed. The desire for higher education seems to overcome all obstacles. For obvious reasons many educators l.au expected, it not a decreased, at lent no greatly increased enrollment; so that they nre now at a lor.s to explain this unexpected phenomenon. Others see in it nothing mo.e
than the fact that public interest, in education is being taken up at the point where it stopped when we went to war. The demand for higher education, however strong it nay seern now, is no greater than it would have been normally l;n there been no war. A good share of the increased college enrollment is due to the fact that the value of a 'olirge educat'on i.- becoming more widely known. No doubt the. raising of the standards of education even ir. the high ?i hools has much to do with this rush to college. Mary parents who a decade ngo were sati:-f:1 with a high school diploma for their children are no longer satN-fied w'th this mir imuni. They are nnplying to education the slogan so familiar in the field of business, ''The best is the cheapest in the long run." Certainly our present rush to college admits of no other interpretation.
