Not even in Chicago, e9"VBE.tiiTB to say. will so large a proportion of homely women be found. And ia this locality not 9 0 per cent, nor nine per cent no, it cannot ba conceded that mn one per cent of our -women axe homely. There are different standards of judging feminine Xmlelrrttude. Turks and Eskimo3 are said most to sdmira -women who are, let us say, plump, wellrounded, moon-faced. Others prefer the svelt type. Xdea.3 concerning beauty vary. And who Is Professor TVem'3 to set himself up as the final arbiter and deClare that 90 per cent of the women are homely? Th standard dictionary, defining "beautiful," eaysi "The definition of beauty,' 'perfection cf Torrn, Is a g-ood key to the meaning of "beautiful." if we understand 'form In its widest sense." No attempt will he made to answer for the women trff Chicago as to whether they possess the additional requirement of spiritual loveliness. But it can be paid in behalf of the fair ones of this locality, without fear of successful contradiction, that they have this, as well as unity and harmony.

HOW CAN IT WORK? The same day that the chief of one of the largest industrial corporations in the United States half threatened to supply its homp market with manufactured Roods from Germany, the German mark dropped to the lowest point ever reached. The American manufacturer's reason for foregoing production and substituting finished articles from Germany was the substantially lower prices, rates which American manufacturers cannot touch, he said. Hut does not the complete collapse of the mark foreshadow a grand smashup of the competition from Germany? Is net the titter valuelessness of the mark the consequence of the virtually unlimited issue of paper currency and will not that bring about an industrial collapse to fit the financial situation? Can Germany hope to continue manufacturing at such low costs under the steady retreat of the mark and the equally steady climb of the mountain of paper money? Why even think of throwing up our industrial hands at command of manufacturing enterprises depending upon a mass of currency which within a short time may be actually worth less than nothing?
? THE ARBUCEXE ORGIES. TTnat-the demand for censorship never cculd accompliso, because censorship is un-Ameriean and contrary tfl American institution, promises to be accomplished and most thoroughly s.ccorupishel through the revelations of the Arbuckla case. The wide world was o shocked when the spotlight was turned upon th crrles of some of the elect in moviedora that the moral reaction is bound to bo sweeping. Hf-re we have at last a view of tha atmosphere 5n which' some of the motion pictures are produced. Here wo have the fundamental reason for the demand
MR. HARDING'S HOLIDAYS. Although a physician says President Harding is the most robust occupant the white house has had in many years, it is always good news to hear that he is indulging in a brief period of rest and relaxation from the cares of his exacting office. As a result of his several week-end trips of late Washington correspondents comment on the reino al of the "tired lines" from his face, although before the outings he was not seriously fatigued. But he is extremely wise to takfi the ounce cf prevention that is worth so much more than the pound of cure. The president is about to enter upon a period of unusually- heavy responsibilities. The coming conference to discuss reduction and limitation of armaments is known to be much on his mind. He realizes that unless the matters coming before the conference are handled with the utmost tact and skill they may precipitate a highly dangerous situation. On the other hand, the nations will now have the opportunity to take the most advanced step in their history toward insuring the peace cf the world, relieving the burdens of military expense under which they are now laboring and settling questions that threaten to grow into causes of war. While Mr. Harding wisely will noi participate directly in the conference as a member, his responsibility will be no less great as he considers daily the progress that is being made toward the main objkect of the gathering and confers with America's representatives. The people do not begrudge their president hl9 outings. They rejoice to find him keeping himself fit for his work.
