will nave a close competitor In football for the rest cf the season. Will this team or that beat beat its ancient rival this fall? Who will lead la the western conference? Who will crry off honors in the east? These are questions which are shaping themselves today anil which in the coming days will come more and more to the front. From now on in Increasing numbers moleskins and nost'ginmls and headgear will be brought forth from dark closet d and attics, where they have lain for the last nine months; tackling dummies will be rigged up; Mai wart and husky youths will be given, a careful scrutiny by zealous coaches, and within a week or ten days the ines of scrimmage will form the gridin n. It is the fact that the good player must be In good physical condition which has given football the va.'ue it has as a game. So long as it clings to the ideal o the physical and mental development of the participants, football is a. game deserving of support.

THE HOUSE NEED. An Interesting feature of the housing shortage lies in that cities of less than f,000 population are in more acute need of home construction than cities of larger population. This fact Is revealed in responses to a questionnaire sent out by Building Age. Answers were received from 290 cities, 100 of them over 2".000 population and the remainder in the smaller class. With the needs directly expressed as a basis on which to place an estimate, it' appears that the smaller cities of the country are in need of 822,905 hcuses while the larger ones need but 319,528. This situation is conclusive evidence that there is a great building business ahead, if the cost is brought within limits which will prove encouraging to those wanting houses. Activity In that line alone would be sufficient to lift us out of the business depression. The world is in the position of a herd of cattle that is milling It is moving but is not getting anywhere. Somebody needs to indicate direction by starting, but unhappily those who might point tha way are reluctant to take the step. The obstruction to house building lies in the cost. These who might remove that obstacle appear to prefer to wait, obsessed by the hope apparently that they can circumvent in their industry a world-wide downward tendency. Still those who want homes may be able to wait too and may lose less by the process than the others.
