BY J. BART CAMPBELL, f STAFF CORRESPONDENT I. N. SERVICEl WASHINGTON, Sept. 15. Orowing dissension among republican senators
regarding proposed tax legislate... coupled with the failure of Secretary Mellon and Budget Director Dawes to convince tho senate finance committee that a saving of $350,000,000 in government expenditures Is possible during the current fiscal year, served today to muddle further the revenue revision situation, which threatens to plunge the senate into a Ions, bitter fight when It reconvenes six days hence. It is freely predicted President TinrrHna- will be compelled to heed the
! appeals of administration leaders that
he summon republican senators to a white house conference In an effort to adjust their eerious differences as U the methods that should be employed to "reduce and equalize taxation." Criticism of the hou30 tax bill "falling to give the poor man's side of the tax question" Is pouring in upon senators. After announcing first that they Intended to rewrite the house measure. Senator Penrose of Pennsylvania, chairman of the senate finance committee and others of Its republican mebers closely assoctatei with the administration, have virtually failed to back it up. They sought to allay opposition by rejecting several of Secretary Mellon"s latest tax eugestions, one to abolisa all surtaxes above 25 per cent. They have, however. Invited trade opposition from the senatorial "agricultural bloc" by proposing a retention of 50 per cent' of the transportation tpassenger a.nd freight) taxes during the 1922 calendar year. Their acceptance of the house provision for the abolition of the excess profits tax on January 1. 1922, and for a surtax maximum of 32 per cent, has met with the disapproval of progressive and independent republican senators. Even Penrose and his associates concede there are "breakers ahead" for the revised house bill they intend to report to the senate.
