THE SCHZXE THAT FAILED. It seem? t&tt Ui British and Japanese Kovernrr.eo.ts designed to make a test of the Amerlcanlsni of the Hardinpi administration when a "preliminary conlfcjeiic" of the three powers wad pre.jxased to discuss lu secret problems of tie 1'aciftc that ehal! prcperly codjo before the International gathering our president will invite to Washington this fall. Well, they found It 100 per cent. A3 wa are informed now the British and Japanese knew it were heirless to suggest a tripartite alliance by traty, the United States Decerning the third member. In succession to the Anglo-Japanese alliance, but they did think "fume larger arrangement" might be entered into which would serve their purpose. President Harding and Secretary Hughes were not to be caught by such bait. The conference on limitation of artaaxnent3 and the Pacific questions is not designed, by America, to be productive of private arrangements for selfish ends of a few mighty powers. What this nation desires ia abolishment cf all military alliances :vo wf lias cf international relations on a plane ti ?rz".' with ail countries sharing ia the benefits. jrVesldcuc Harding is looking ahead. If the Washirjton conferees can reach an understanding as to common rights In the Far East, having due regard to the unextlngmishable rights of the several peoples of that sctloa of the world, a noteworthy step will have Lfri taken toward realization of more Just conditions ell around the globe. If the approaching conference tyhould yield the results of which it is capable we should te within measurable distance of that association of nations formed for the promotion of peace on a basis of Justice which President Harding is pledged to strive to bring Into being.
ACCOEDEJG TO LAW. A few months ago the country was regaled with the romantic" tale of a man who. already married and having a family, took unto himself a second wife and tried the experiment of harboring the two under one roof. The sequel is current now6. The first and lawful wife has been awarded a divorce and alimony. So far as the public is informed this will end the unsavory business, in its legal aspects at any rate. This scandalous affair and ita denounement were made possible by differences in marriage statutes enacted by the states. The second marriage of thia man. bijjeruous a -coralc; to the laws of most states, was not offensive in the anDOQ wealth where It was performed for a purely technical reason. Presumably it is legal elsewhere under that provision of the constitution requiring recognition In good faith by all states of the legal enactment of the others. The case may give impetus to the long-struggling movement for uniform marriage and divorce laws, but it is to be doubted that anything tangible will be accomplished. Public sentiment passively, if not actively, favors liberality in divorce enactments and tho administration of them. The diversity of laws is a convenience that a great many would loth to surrender. As the object of uniform divorce laws advocates is to make the matrimonial ties more secure, popular opinion favors making no changes.
TOUCHING WTT.HT,L3TS TENDES SPOT. Worldly glory is transient at the best and those with philosophic minds actx-pt with equanimity the mutations of time, knowing that the pendulum swings both ways and that tranquility succeeds agitation. Hut Wilhelm Hohenzcllern Is not likely to take a calm view of the fact that a number of streets and public places In Berlin are to lose such titles as Kaiser, Kronprinz, Hohenzollern and other suggestive of the once imperial family of which he is the head. This result is to come about through the action cf the Berlin municipal council to change the names of streets and places which havt a monarchists or militaristic meaning. This will be a sad blow at the pride of Wilhelm, who never was known to be In the shrinkling violet class. Immured In a place which at least provides personal safety for him, but for which he has no love, the ex-kaiser's heart perhaps his hope also is in Prussia and to have the chief city cf the empire he formerly ruled forgetting the homage which he no doubt thinks still is his due must be gall indeed to a nature such as his. Although he fought to add to his own perscmi power the nation behind him pretended to think that he waged war for the glory of the empire and its pr -tection. He must have felt that in his exile he still held the respect and esteem of a large number of his former subjects but he seemingly is being disillusi n.-d

Healthy cows are an important item in the marketing of milk. The Hammond Dairy Company is super-particular in this respect, personally overseeing every condition in the maintenance of perfect herds and in the delivery of the milk to our own collecting plant in the heart of the blue grass region. The final process of pasteurizing, sterilizing, bottling and refrigeration in our Hammond plant produces a milk that is unequaied in its purity, taste and nutritive value.
When you cover the surface of a big generous slice of bread with Peerless Butter something tells you in advance : "This is going to be a real feed.' Whether you use Peerless Butter to touch up a juicy sparkling steak, or to saturate the potatoes, or to "first coat" a sandwich, you'll find it appetizingly delicious and a necessary part of every enjoyable meal. It is made from the same milk and cream delivered to your door; it is pasteurized and sterilized, thus insuring uniform sweetness and purity and comes to you as fresh as though it had just been taken from the big automatic churns. A pKone call and we'll reserve a pound to be delivered with your milk in the morning.
