Announcement to the Public

It is for the purpose of protecting the consumers of ice of the City of East Chicago and Whiting that I make the following statement: On July 18, this year, the Citizens Ice and Coal Company of East Chicago announced an increase in their ice from 60 cents to 80 cents per one hundred pounds. This price was continued up to August 8, when the men upon the ice wagons from this company commenced making individual prices to my customers, ranging from 80 to 40 cents per one hundred pounds. During the time the Citizens Ice and Coal Company was charging these exhorbitant prices for ice, the Indiana Harbor Pure Ice Company continued their old rate of 60 cents, which did not vary one cent during the warmest period, my customers apparently being satisfied with the 60 cent rate and against the announced rate of 80 cents of the Citizen's Ice and Coal Company. Does the public believe that it is fair and just to either consumer of dealer for a concern to sell a product that will not net him a reasonable profit, thereby "freezing" him out and placing the consumer at the mercy of the stronger ice concern to levy any old price that they might choose after the smaller competitor has been put out of business by these unfair means?
