T INTER NATIONAL NEWS SERVICE .PHILADELPHIA. July oi The Xavy Collier Cyclops which furnished the greatest mystery of tho war by its unexplained disappearance, ell a prey to the torpedoes of Germaa submarines operating off the South American ioast. according to Franz Kottie, now second officer of the Hamburg-American liner Deutscafeld, Svho was former senior lieutenant oa a U-boat during the awr. Rottio praised the convoy system developed by Admiral Sims, which ho said made it almost impossible for 17boats to sink American transports. The only feasible method of attack was to lve under the protecting destroyer and torpedo the transport inside the con1?cy line, a risk wiiich few U-boat officers were willing to take, ho said. The Keutnar.t described L'-boat operations off the English cast in which his boat was badly damaged by two "mystery ships" disguised as trawlers. He bears scars marking where shrapnel caught him as he was closing the conning tower as the submarine crow were forced to abandon their deck gun. On another trip, Lieutenant Kottie said his U-boat approached so close to Js'ew-ca-rtle, Er.gland, that tho crew took turns watching crowds of Sunday promer.adcrs on shore through the periscope.
