IN TOUCH WITH LAKE COUNTY. "We know by the occasional editorial flings that are taken at Lake county by Indiana editors that they have an idea it Is a pretty wild and wooly place, and It is to be hoped that their present Visit will set them right on that score. If they will us their eyes and earjs and you caa generally deyend upon a newspaper nan to do thai the visiting editors will find out that the people they come In contact with here are pretty touch the same as the home folk everywhere. Lake county la made up of many peoples, much itduslrial life and a network of railroads, and where the'se are, growing pains abound and things happen. Fundamentally Lake county Is the same at many other ccuntlee la Indiana. It seethes with life and actiou. Once upon a time it was an outpost, now it is a part of the state. It must be remembered that all the evil influences of Chicago and Its environs reach over into Indiana through Lake county for its people to contend with, but give it time and the county will even leaven Chicago. The region, however, needs no defenders, it is amply able to speak for itself, and the editors will come In close contact with it today.
done. They polat the 'w&i', too, In the direction of what btixht be done by man if h should take it into his head to apply this same intelligence to the problem of his industrial relations. Surely amon$ a race that run harness the rays of the sun and set the oce:m t6 work for Us members, poverty, the fear of unemployment, and the dread of penniless old age ought to be unknown.
'S'TOO BAD 'STOO BAD! We have a yearn to attend the republican editorial convention la Hammond and partake of the bounty of the Calumet region, for which purpose editorial conventions, we ttaum't, are chiefly held. Fond memory carries us back to the days of free transportation an' everything, but them good old days are gene for ever. South Bend Tribune. Had we known any South Bend man wanted to come to the doings that badly we would have seat the old flivver over after him.
WHERE PEOQRESS LA (IS. In some fields of human endeavor we are doubtless still under the away of somewhat primitive Ideals and instinct. In the matter of war, to tk6 only one Illustrious example, we seem to have advanced but little over the cave man, except in so far as we have devised ways and means of killing off a larger number of combatanta and even non-combatants In given period of time. In some respects, too, we have made but scant progress in our Industrial relations. We still muddle along, as Mr. Wells would say, with ever-recurring periods of unemployment, with industrial stagnation, with strikes and with ether costly disturbances in the realm of Industry. It would seem that a stage of clvilixation which has to its credit such miracles of inventiveness and progress as the motor . car, the airplane, wireless telegraphy, and the like, would soon begin to address Itself to the task of removing the obstacles to a better and more secure enjoyment of the arte of peace. There seems to be no limit to what we can do in some lines of progress. The potential possibilities of radium are well-night beyond speculation. A scientist baa just demonstrated In a series of remarkable experiments that an x-ray apparatus can photograph objects through a stone wall more than 20 feet distant from the source of the rays. Investigators tell us that they caa bring heat from th sun to be use3 in a practical way; so that even the worry over a decreasing coal and oil supply may become less acute than it was yean ago. From PariB there has been brought wor 1 that French scientists lay claim to having harnesses the ocean to furnish energy for man. A commission appointed two years ago to consider the question of "blue coal" reports that enough has been accomplished to assure that in the near future oceanic energy will drive all fhe wheels and mechanisms of industry and commerce. These are only a few items of the long account of what the bumaa mind can accomplish when it addresses itself to the task of a conquest Of nature. They give promise of incredible things yet to be learned and
THE WASTAGE OT WATER. Complaining bitterly of burning lawns, insufficient pressure, inability to wash decently and with dispatch because of the so-called water shortage, the people of Hammond should now listen to words of caution. There is water plenty cf it. The burning question is, are you sure that your own house is In order? Are you convinced tbat part of the shortage Is not applicable to you? Do ycu observe the sprinkling rulea as set forth by the water department? If you don't, part of the responsibility for those burned out lawns rests on your sheulder.. There is all the water that a dty of this size can use. If it is used properly. John Erlcson, consulting engineer for Chicago, and at present in the employ of Hammond to oversee the construction of the new water works, told the
people in his review of the situation that Hammond people were flagrant, unnecessary water masters. They use about three times as much water as Is necessary for a city of this size. , There are (wo main reasons for this abnormal eonsumption. One is the bogging of all the water by the citizens residing in the northern part of the town, who have sufficient water because they get at the supply before those in the south end. These people do not observe the sprinkling hours set aside for them, but use the hose whenever the spirit moves them. The result is, the south siders are fortunate in getting any water at all when they turn on the hose at 7 o'clock. The ether class of wasters Is more comprehensive, and includes about every on. Thee people, In attempting to keep butter and other food in good condition, keep the water running at all times- Instead of buying ice. as they should. There is tco much of this kind of waste going on for the good of the city. We are promised that next year things will be different, and there will be plenty of water for all. In the meantime, the fair thing is to give everyone a chance. No one is going to get all the water he wants, but everyone can get a reasonable amount if a little forebearance in the use of the hose and the taps is shown. The time will come when the city will be equipped with meters, and when this happens, there will bo no more wastage. At present this plan U not feasable, because of the heavy expense to be met in improving the works. Until meters are installed, and the system is put in order, lets have some conservation.
