A'PATIENT PEOPLE. It is to be hoped that Hammond will never have to B through another summer with the filthy and Inadequate water supply that It has now. The water is often so dirty that not only is it unfit to drink, but It isn't fit to bathe In. The amount of water given householders is woefully insufficient and it aeems as if just about the limit had been reached. Hammond people have, taking it all in all, been very patient with enduring these deficiencies. They have borne with lack cf water and dirty water these many years and their protests up to the present have been unavailing. Water users could put up with a shortage perhaps If the supply was clean and didn't smell so. Many of the people will have occasion to remember the summer of 1921 for a long time after it has passed into history.
THE STRING IS PLAYED OUT. Th letter of Secretary of the Treasury Mellon, emphasized by the visit of President Harding to the capitol to address congress, served to impress upon that body the grave dangers of saddling additional burdens upon the treasury at this time. The nation's morale could net stand fhe Imposition of additional taxes. The peopie have struggled along under their present burden, encouraged by the belief that a new tax law would soon bring relief. If congress negatived all the benefits of a new internal revenue law by the passage of a soldier bonus bill, putting obligations of $3,330,000,000 more upon the people to pay, the country would break under the strain. But It would not jeally be a bonus at all. Those who think they would benefit from such legislation ehould remember that they must pay their share of the higher taxes and higher prices that wou!J Inevitably . follow an attempt to raise the benus money. Industry would be one 4l the worst sufferers, and the unemployment that would surely follow would hit hardest at the men who have returned from overseas and are now trying to make good in nrw found positions. The enactment of the bonus legislation would have been particularly unfortunate at this time, but even in the future , Its passage would be an economic blight on the country.
monthB cf the year? To answer that the adherents of the pollen theory pick on the golden rod. Hut hay fever claims lta victims in places where there is no golden rod and residents of large cities who never are within mllo3 of that popular wild flcwer at any time often suffer the most severely. And if pollen is the cause of the diseases why are not all who live In the country afflicted and all who live In the city Immune?. The writer who suggested that physicians turn their attention to lyiy fever may or may not be a sufferer but In any event he puts up to them a puizle worthy rf their fullest consideration. That it is not ordinarily a fatal malady does not make the hay fever problem less Important. The fact that It seemingly is such a simple and mere or less harmless affliction makes It seem that the r.nswer to the problem should be easy to discover. Seemingly of a similar nature to influenza, it is not so often fatal, but it causes a great amount of suffering each year. The very mysterlcusness of the disease should be a sufficient motive to cause oine physician to determine to conquer it.
NEW BUSINESS SLOGAN. "Man, Look at Your Shoes!" is a new sh ;?an Hammond retail shoe dealers are going to push strenuously from, now on. It is a prise taker and is being used nationally. Shoe dealers hepe to make It as popular as "Say It With Flowers." The latter slogan became cne of the irtost widely used since slogans were first thought of as trade stimulators. In the shoe dealers slogan there Is a considerable suggestlveness. The purpose of the phrase la to remind the public that It is "Time to Retire." (With apologies to Vacuum Cup Tires.) Pesters bearing the new slogan are now being distributed. It is expected they will do a large amount of effective missionary work.
SAFEGUARDING YOUNG GIRLl. "Miss Alice," the Oklahoma congresswoman, thinks that legislation against the rolled-down stocking, the joy rides, the toddle and other forms of dancing will be less effective in safeguarding the young girls of America than the guidance and watchfulness of their mothers. Not many persons will dispute that viewpoint. All mothers are too precious to be condemned, some of them to be criticised. Today's mothers perhaps measure up In solicitude for their children as well as the mothers of aay other day. But with the change of times today's mothers must be even more concerned ibout their boys and girls and because some of them have failed to realize that ccndltions are different, the country is witnessing a disturbing tendency among many young folks. Laws will not remedy It. Police will be useless. The remedy lies with the mothers. It is for them to apply it.
WE CAN SYMPATHIZE. Great Britain is going through much the same experience with her railways as did the United States. They have been Under government control, but will be returned to their private owners in August. The roads have been nearly wrecked physically and financially by administration mistakes during the time they have been In the hands of the government, and the roads have back claims against the federal authorities of J 300,000,000. A bill is now pending in parliament to provide for the return of the properties. Many of the provisions of our own transportation act have been adopted by the British, who foresee a much more efficient and economical administration of their railroads.

WHY IS HAY FEVER? An eastern newspaper suggests that men of medlcin turn their attention to hay fever. There Is no doubt that a remedy for this distressing and mysterious malady would prove a great blessing for a large number of persons throughout the world. We call it a mysterious malady merely because it is so. What is its cause and why must its victims suffer annualy in spite of all they do XA prevent its recurrence? Those upon whom it has laid its hold almost to a day, know when they will be called upon to again endure its agonies-. Because hay fever is more prevalent in August than In any other mcnth it is popularly supposed that pollen from the flowers is the cause. But why pollen from August's flowers and not from those blooming in other

OCCASIONALLY WE are lulled Into the belief that the statement "there is a sucker born every minute" is not exiomatic but just about that time the first page of any newspaper proves that it is.
