II await ed word from senate leaders aa to whether Immediate "financial action upon anti-beer legislation may be expected. If promise of immediate action is not given at once, the beer regulations are to be signed and promulgated. Senate leaders were unable to assure Commissioner Blair, without further consultation of the probable date of final action. A factor against early action on the Willis-Campbell bill also Is the farmer relief legislation, which has the right of way over beer legielation. unless by unanimous consent it is side-tracked. Physicians probably will be allowed to prescribe not in excess of 7-8 gallons upon a single prescription, an equivalent of about three cases of beer, as often as they see fit. A large number of breweries have their applications on file to manufacture and sell high voltage beer. Heports from the state directors today Indicated that the druggists' demand for medicinal beer has been vry large.

and then a constable set the goods out in the street. Unconcerned apparently, Mr Dent watched the procedure. When it was completed she seated herself on a pile of bedding, daring the arm of the law to force her to leave the sidewalk. A hard rain fell an hour later, Mrs. Dent left.

HIDE DUTIES

BT A- O. WAYWARD WASHINGTON July 21. The house turned Into the home stretch on the tariff bill today with a wrangle on the duty on hides providing the excitement. Before the final vote is taken on the bill, probably late today, the 15 pet cent duty on hides which was written Into the measure several days ago it likely to be swept aside by a wave of protective sentiment. Boots and shoes and harness caused the trouble. The protectionists who xi-ere burled under the farmers' demands for a duty on hides, came along with a compensatory duty of 10 per sj, ccnt on boots, shoes, harness and other leather manufactures. Despite appeals to the agricultural group to be consistent and stand for protection generally the farmer repreentatives rose In opposition to mese compensatory duties and kicked them out. The solemn warning was issued then by republican members of the ways and means committee that the record vote today might throw hide back on the free list. The democrats cheered . Early today the compensatory duties on cotton manufactures to off-set. 15 per cent duty on long staple cotton, adopted by the house, will be presented by the ways and means committee. Should they meet the same fate as the duties on boots and shoes the duty on lone- staple cotton may be defeated.
