PROHIBITION IN LAKE COUNTY. The success or failure of prohibition in Lake county Is a matter of opinion to be (lecirlecf by the experience ot the individual. Admitting that from the t tan d point of the federal and civil government it has been a failure insofar as strict enforcement is concerned, prohibition has accomplished many things that it vas designed to do. The consumption of liquor, wine and beer has been decreased to a minimum. The public has ben weened away from the habit to a considerable extent. And the saloon has been removed Irom politics in which it was a vicicus influence. Counter-balancing these benefits however, we have & good deal of lawless trafficking in illicit booze, an increase ixt poisoning from adulterated whiskey, home drunkenness from wine and beer and the less of revenue from saloon licenses. Across the state line in West Hammond there exists the sorry spectacle of half a hundred saloonkeepers violating the law with apparent Immunity. "Whiskey and "teer" are sold over The bar to pilgrims from all parts of Lake county. West Hani-
JUSTICE TAFT. Announcement of President Harrihng's appointment of former President William Howard Taft to the chief justiceship of the I'nited States supreme court, to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Justice White, was well received by the country as a whole. President Taft has gained in popularity and the esteem of the American people steadily shne he left the whit, house. He is more in favor with the people now than when he was first elected to the presidency and he is well qualified in every way for the
high duties of the supreme bench.
Mr. Taffs training from his ycuth up fits him for the place, and his temperament has always been even

Us enforcement only where the violation becomes a public nusiance, or shall we beccme Eteru and unrelenting on tn theory that our national sanctity depends on our respect for law and that Arrerican citizenship is compromised by irreverence to such a law? The uncomfortable thing about prohibition In Lake county is the unfair way in which it works oul. The l'i'licw who can't pay the price or doesn't happen to be "in on the stuff" doesn't get a driii!-:. John and Hill KCt held of a quart now an.l then, but Mike hasn't had a swallow unuss he is (or.lifcb. cnou.h to drink the poii-ni they sell in the lmv vloiut. li.,4 saloons. That makes prohibition class Initiation which is un-American. It dr. esn't matter that the fellow win. can't have a little liquor is probably as well JlT or hcrnr oft for not having It. The fai-f remains that he is deprived of something that he used to lu-ve and the other fellow isn't. Yet, with all these arguments, people are not dissatisfied with the change. There's no denying it was ;i step for social betternient. All this talk about the increase of drinking among young people, and, especially by girls, is twaddle. More girls drank when the cabarets ran wide open and unafraid. Prssibiy not the tame clas of girls, but they were girls nevertheless and the net harm was greater. Once the novtdty wears off the youux people of "our better families" will be auhanied of the escapades that followed in the wake of prohibition. In fact, it is doubtful whether as many of them drank after prohibition as did before It became effective. There always exlsited a "fast bunch" in the exclusive circles. The rising generation is immeasurably better off because of .prohibition. And so are thfi. rest of us fcr that matter.

But how about prohibition and YOU? Are you spending more money for liquor and more time away from your home and family than you did when Lake county supported nearly 800 saloons? Does the saloonkeeper cash yoar pay check and keep a considerable portion for your bar bill? Are the wife and kiddies happier? Would you vote to have the saloons returned and the liquor traffic resumed as it existed before the war? Or do you favor some new system of dispensing intoxicating beverages? The lamentable failure of the "wet" parade ia New York City protesting against prohibition indicates that .America's metropolis, known as the wettest city in America, considers it a lost cause. The wets must reallie the tremendous task before them if they hope to get two-third, of the states to vote to repeal the constitutional amendment. Now that the liquor interests have been dissolved, so to speak and are no longer represented by wealthy organizations such as the distillers and brewer maintained; now that they have been booted out of both parties and are without political influence; now that they are devoting so much of their time to illegal trafficking and must necessarily remain under cover, there appears little likelihood that they can obtain a restoration of the saloon in the United States. What then are we to do? Shall we continue to
violate the prohibition law indiscriminately, asking for J
ticeship. And, abeve everything, he is 100 per cent American and an intense believer in the American form of government and in our American institutions, which in these days are qualifications of no mean importance.

You can't beat a Camel, because you can't beat the tobacco that goes into Camels. That's why Camels are the choice of men who know and love fine tobacco. They know what makes Camels so smooth, so fragrant and mellow-mild. They'll tell you that the expert Camel blend of choice Turkish and Domestic tobaccos makes a cigarette smoke you can't equal no matter what you pay. But it doesn't take an expert to tell Camel quality. You'll spot it the very first puff. Try Camels yourself.
