For the hfona rme la the history of Cook county a woman was found guilty of slaying her husband when a Jury convicted Mrs. Dora "Waterman, 41, of the murder I.ouis Waterman, a wealthy butcher. Jack Waterman, her 7-year-old-son who was tried with her, was acquitted. The Jury fixed Mrs. Waterman's punishment at seventeen years in the penitentiary. Mrs. Waterman had admitted slayJug her husband with a butcher's Cleaver. She pleaded self defense. When the verdict of the jury was announced Mrs. Waterman offeree ner thanks sarcastically, declaring: "If I had been young and pretty " Forty-two women hvt been tried for murder in Cook county in the past fifteen years. Thirty-one have ben acquitted and eleven convicted. All but two of those found guilty, however, were charged with slaying someone other than their husband.
