IRISH PEACE CONFERENCE HAS STARTED

DeYclera Has Great Hopes of Meeting Which Has Preliminary Sessions To-Day. (BY KWTOX C. PAHKK) STAFF CORRESPONDENT I. N. SERVICE LONDON. Ju!j- H. The preliminary IrUh P"ace conference opened here today while the who'e nuilon breathed prayers for its success. While the meetinjr between Premier Lloyd Georpre and Kamnnn do Valera, President of the Irish Republic," doea not be In until late in tbe day. there were conferences on both aides prior to the fodslon at JO Downing street. B-: f or leaving for Down,ln street. De Vaiera said he favored public meetings. 'It wftuld be most satisfactory to have open covenants openly arrived at." declared the so-called Irish President. "But I do not know whether this Is always posTsiblu. I am sure the present atmosphere is favorable for peace. Both England and Ireland want peaee. "'Up to date the discussions between England and Ireland have been in the nature of a long range bombardment. Now we are really trettina; together. I have jreat hopes lor a.settlement. At the headquarters of t lie? Irish delegation It was said that Art O'Urien. socalled Sinn Fein Ambassador to Ensland, would accompany De Valera, but he would not participate in the discussions between De Valera and Uoyd eorge. The Irish envoys is. led a statement denying the "peace term'' which were printed by the London Morning Post. It was said there had been no discussion of peace terms at Dublin cither directly or Indirectly. The Sinn Feincrs and Unionh'ta at Dublin only discussed Lloyd George's invitation to London. It was said. Tile Premier held a two-hour discussion with his colleagues late in the morning discussing lines of peace. As the peace con ver.-'ations were getting under way 'word came from Belfast of fresh disorders and it was apparent that neither the Unionists nor the Sinn F tuners in the Ulster City are goinn to observe the Armistice to the strict letter. A yirl was shot dead at Belfast and two men and a boy were wounded. There waj much shooting in the streets of the city during the greater part of the night. There were serious clashes between police and disorderly crowds in Lellast late "Wednesday and several casualties resulted from fusillades in the York street section. Premier Lloyd Oeorre has made a personal appeal to the Brlfast Orangemen to preserve order but the Extremist section disregarded it entirely. Premier Lloyd George. who has spent Wednesday at his country estate at Chrquers, conferring with British ofricia'.s. came to Downing Street for the final arrangements for the peace meetins:. It was anticipated the fuccess or failure of the conference would be known within 24 hours. According to tiie arrangements, the Premier was to be assisted In the conversations by Sir Hamar Greenwood. Chief .Secretary for Ireland. Austen Chamberlain. Lord keeper of the Privy Seal and A. J. Balfour. THOUGHT HE HAD SNAKES; IT WAS S Michigan City Engineer Was Frightened for Minute Anyway. Harry SI . Miles, civil engineer for the Lon?j Beach company and former city engineer, has no fear of snake when they are en the ground. but when they climb up his trouser legs, ihut is a different story nd thereby hangs a lale. Engineer Miles and his assistant. "Bob" Krueeer, were busy at work Burveying some Long Iiewh property, when suddenly Mr. Miles let out a yelp and clutched frantically at his trouser leg. "There is a snake up my leg I have hold e.f hi:n by the head " shouted Mr. Mtb-s to Bob. as he enme running to his assiPtnnce With a broken portion or a bottle, he attempted to cut the trouser leg open and let the offender out. but the bott'e ftillvl to cut. .'nid Mt . Miis reached up t -i trouser le. 4i grab ih ; -i vile nnd v is awarded by a sharp pierce In his finger which won dripping blood when he withdrew his h.tnel in much haste. A passing automobile v as hailee, a pen cut knife obtained and the pants open . But instead of ,i venomous the only thing founl Inside serpent, was a length of suspender, which hael dropped down and caused all the scare. And the "snake bite" on Mr. Miles' finger was nothing m.ire than a scratch frem the catch buckle on the suspended strap. Although Mr. Miles fears were relieved, he rpoiled a perfectly good pair of trousers. SUMMERS NOT GOING OUT OF BUSINESS Someone started a rumor yest. rd.tyj that Simmers' Pharmacy was goinj. out: of bujiiu ss. Ther is alarg sjtrn - j played over the store which sa,'-s that $35.00u worth of drug stock must l.e acid immediately. So ijou'ut this is the ba.sU of the humor, but a i'tate- ! runt was secured from Mr. Sumers to'

the effect that he is not goinc out oi' business. on the other hand, he intends to spend quite a su of money in alterations, in addition to the altera: on now (,'oing on in the llohmun block. Mr. Summers is making a reul .Ue-b.-eaiise he believes it better policy to vacrifico his surplus dru stock and sundries rather than iro tot he expense of transferrins it to the warehouse and back. The store has; catered to lare crowds all week, with the fountain business more than ourtsiiin. since reeluclnj; the price of sodas and sundaes to 10c. Summers stated this uiorninj; he htd also increased the uantity of cream going into the rodus and sundaes. At THE PARTHENON No glycerine tear;! for Alice Calhoun, the Vitagraph star, who will be se.n at the Parthenon theater on Sunday. Realism is her aim. i "If I can't cry naturally.'" said Alice to her director, "I wont cry at all. It' you wish mo to shed plenty oT real tears yeu can help a trrcai deal by playtnt; the talking machine." She named a number of records that always make her cry and irector George V. Seyffertitz sent the property boy after one of them. A VSctrola was installed near the set and , the record started. It was but an ins'tant before Alice becan o sniffle nd soon real tears were rolling down hor cheeks . Miss Calhoun is naturally emotional and her sympathies are easily played upon. In "Cinaeii De'ors," she has u heavy dramatic role. In the earlier scene s she is a young girl, light-heart-i-4 and carefre-e. The story covers a perloel of several years and the , star is given opportunity to show her ability to mature before the camera. She ploys the lead at the ages of fourteen, eighteen and twenty-two. Th fctory is one that is sure to hold th.c interest and has in addition to many dramatic scenes, a vein of humor rvrnning through it.
