ISPECUL TO THE TIHES1 CEDAR LAKE. IND., July 14 Dentists of the Northwestern Indiana Dental Association yesterday exercised their tooth-pulling right arms in a base ball game which was a part of the annual outing. One Hammond dentist skinned the knee he uses to hold his patients in the chair anTJ there were other minor casualties but on a whole it was a successful afternoon. Whenever a fellow dentist met with

a rainful mishap in the games they were playing' all the rest of the den- ; lists would laugh and say: "It didn't ( hurt us a bit." ! The dentists felt entirely at home j

when the bills were presented at the resort restaurants which charge $2.00

and $2.50 for chicken dinners. They would no doubt have appreciated having a little ether In the near beor but the proprietors of the places lacked the Belasco temperment which would have told them that a Jittle anaesthetic was necessary to properly entertain a sr" of dentists. There, was a good deal of. growling at the dinner table. So many dentists have poor teeth, you know. The painless diving contest was won by Dr. Leonard J. Moran. A farmer dentist won the horse shoe pitching contest . Prizes Included complete sets of magazines published in 1909 to be put on the tables in the dental waiting rooms for the benefit of waiting ratients. It is a theory of dentists that after reading some ancient periodical for an hou and a half the patient becomes so bored that he doesn't much care what happens when he gets In the chair. In the tup-of-war the losing side of dentists kept calling "more gas, liable, give 'em more gas, carsarn him, ho is getting th best of me." Hammond dentists who won prizes are Drs. Moran, Gillis, OKee.fe, Iddings. Richards, Spitler; Hatch: Back: Frantz and Bolin.

MELLON BEFORE THESENATECOiWTEE BY J. EART CAMPBELL 1STAFF CORRESPONDENT I. N. SERVICE WASHINGTON. July 14. Reappearance of Secretary of the Treasury Mellon before the senate finance committee today found a wide divergence of

opinion prevailing among both its republican and democratic members regarding the policy the administration should pursue in adjusting the $11.-

000.000.000 foreign indebtedness to the

United States. Senator Smooth, L'tah republican

held the view that "it would be the

absolute ruination of the country's foreign commerce" for the administration to under take now to collect either principal or interest. He favored tlie speedy passage ' of the bill to give the administration the blanket authority it seeks in handling the foreign loans. He Indicated however, that the MIL-probably would be "modifies!" before the committee, reports It-to the senate.

KILLS BANDIT' FIRST; THEN IS SHOT DEAD. (Continued from page one.?

he stepped to the ground he raised the weapon and fired point blank at the smaller negro, the bullet striking the bandit in the forehead and causing instant death. At the same time the short negro also fired as did his pal. Ruskin dropped to the street fatally wounded with a bullet hole in his cheek and another in the chest. Ha died several minutes later before medical assistance arrived. Nearly overcome with fright Miss Rafflin watched the second negro calmly go through the pockets of his dead pal and also make a thorough search of Ruskin's clothing. Making sure that he had secured everything valuable, the bandit with his revolver still pointed at the automobile approached the machine and stripped

Miss Rafflin of her wrist watch and $8 in change. She saved a valuable ring, however, which she slipped from her finger while the bandit was busily engaged searching the dead bodies and hid it in the car. Demanding that she get out of the car the bandit ordered her to walk towards a nearby house and after he had made his escape north into the woods on Seventh avenue. Miss Rafflin roused the occupants from their slumber and upon going back to the machine found Ruskin and the negro both dead. According to the police, the second bandit was latt seen coming towards Gary when he ran past Hogan's place on Fifth avenue nearly a half a mile from the scene of the shooting. BODIKS TO MOHGl'E. The body of the negro was taken to the S. & S. Undertaking parlor on the South Side and that of Ruskin to Williams morgui. According to rumors the dead negro and his pal are the same pair that stuck up several other machines in this vicinity earlier In the evening. This was substantiated whe nthe authorities found a .32

" caliber revolver, a wrist watch,

powder puff, box of face paint and 13 bullets on his person. This the other negro evidently overlooked In his haste. Miss Rafflin, almost overcome from her experience was brought to the Gary police station where excitely

she told her story.

AO TRACES OK BASDIT. Soon after the shooting the Gary police threw a cordon of men around the district and although they maintained a vigil throughout the night up at noon today had found no trace of the second bandit. In remarking about the chances people were taking on stopping on the lonesome Toads on tho outskirts of Gary, Chief Forbls Intimated that many were taking unnecessary chances. Ry this he inferred thaf residents are making these secluded spots a "Lovers Lane" and are simply Inviting stick up men to rob them.
