LET THE COPPEES SHED. la the hottest hour of the hottest afternoon of last week, which was the hottest of the summer, the l.ottest and most uncomfortable locking Individual in the whole city was one of the traffic cops at a down town street intersection- He baked, he boiled, he fizzled. He radiated heat. The harder the sun shown Ucvrn from a cloudless sky through the breezeless air, the harder the heat bounced back off the brick pavement and hit him in the face. That copper looked like . he could tell a thoroughly baked lobster just how it iclt after it was cooked and ready to be placed on the lable. The difference between the pclicernau and the lobster, however, is that the lobster, after going through it3 bath, is usually set aside to cool, while the police- .'. man Is permitted to keep on with his Turkish bath, "says the Fort Wayne News. - There's a limit to human endurance. It's high lime that the uniform regulations of the police department were changed so that the official garb of the finest permitted them to take off their coats in summer time. Discipline in the force is a fine thing, and of course a neatly coated offiter looks much snappier than cne without when the weather is cool. However, the postoffice department turns out a fair ; looking bunch of soldiers in the summer time, and the army itself during the course of war found that it . could turn out a snappy guard in O. D. shirts. If the - coppers wculd just promise to hold up their jeans with ' d belt and not with "gallusses," the coatless coppers ' with a uniform tie could be made to be the city's orCcial representative without discrediting the city in the least.- Of course, there is the point that a coat hides the policeman's billy" and his "gat" Neverthe- : Uss, the fashion tailors of today are pretty handy about : putting in large and roomy right hand pockets, and aiso, the shoulder holster is pretty bandy, even when worn under the shirt. Let the copper shed a layer.
As ycu increase your advertising you Increase your business so fast that your expenditure turna out io be a much smaller percentage than the percentage of your appropriation. Increased volumne is the way out of present day difficulties. Increased volume is secured through better values and more advertising. It means a lower gross margain for the consumer to nay and more net profit for the merchant. A good illustration of the stimulus afforded by advertising is cited in the following case- At the close of the firat season's business a firm in question decided to reduce its advertising appropriation from Z to 3-42 per cent. The business for the ensuing season declined 12. o per cent. The secoud season the firm appropriated 4. OS per cent fcr the third season's advertising. The business jumped to "4 per cent over the second season and the result was that the appropriation turned out to be only 2.6S per cent instead of 4-68 of the third season's business. Supposing the first season's business to have been a hundred thousand dollars, the proportions of business done to the advertising fcr each succeeding period will work out as fellows: Advertising Sales 131S Spring $ 3.420 $ 87,000 3 918 Fall 4.095 152,250 1913 Spring . 3.654 97,104 1919 Fall 6.166 122,740 1919 Year 9.S20 219,840 1920 Year . 20,979 434,951 The intertsting and instructive thing about these ligures is tbe way in which an attempt to save money by cutting down the advertising percentage, defeats itself. The business drops so fast when you do insufficient, promotion that the percentage of expense scars, due to tbe decreased volume. Your next year's business depends in a large measure on this year's promotion. Now is the time to use more advertising and make every inch count.
: ADVERTISING AND DEPRESSION At this time when bu&iuccs is in a period of ; transition, many business men 3re inclined to decrease " their advertising appropriation. Analyses have defi--nitely shewn that business moves up and down with advertising. A well known clothing firm, with whom most people are familiar, give this testimony: "You i-ally can't spend any money advertising. The real vay to decrease your advertising expense Is to Increase it. It will start your business growing and pretty soon you will find the advertising expenditure can't keep , -up with the growth." The truth is a decent advertising appropriation 13 an investment, not an expense. It's the too Email advertising appropriations that are the expensive ones. : Too small an advertising appropriation Is about the greatest expense a business can have.
A BRITISH EXPERIMENT. While the details remain to be scrutinized and f-ome points are yet to be settled, it is quite clear that the long-drawn-out British coal strike ends with the adaption for the first time of profit-sharing In a British industry on a national scale. The fight has lasted 16 weeks and it has been notable for the absence of violence and for a really stupendous effort on the part of the laboring class to feed the women and children whese husbands were on strike. Yet the issue was such a large one that all labor and all capital felt the necessity of a clear-cut settlement. The subvention the miners now demand from the government, and which is the sole remaining condition on which they resume work, brings profit sharing directly into the coal industry, and practically makes It impossible for the government henceforth to remove its bands. Whether this will work the benefits hoped for remains the big question, the answer to which will be looked for throughout the world.
