taken a, vacation and who would have others believe that a holiday is a new-fangled custom that has jfrown up in recent years and that it aiiea.ls only to tho I4.1v. But the vacation is a very old institution. Ancient
Rome had its seaside resort aiid.it seems that the people of all times have set aside periods for ceasing work and enjoying tho pleasures that life holds fcrth. It is not 1 necessary for anyone to plead the wisdom' -of such a course, for nature takes care of that It provides a season when vitality U lessened seemingly fcr the pur- ' pose of restoring the vigor that has waned by requiring J her ubjects to stop occasionally and pay worship to her raloae. Seme have tried to avoid payment of this tribJute to her. but It la doubtful if anyone has ever done ' so successfully.
VACATION TIME HERE The almanac having caught up with the weather, one may be pardoned if thoughts of vacation ccme more strongly to the froiy. Such thoughts come to a head about this time o' the year in everybody, from the fretful urchin out of school to the business and professional man whose physical body is chained to the desk while 'lis spirit sails off to the dark cool woods that -shade pools where lurks the trout. P.oy and man both have been watching that wonder of nature that is so old. yet new annually, the swelling of the buds ou the trees, their bursting into" blossoms r.nd leaves and the gradual turning of the embryotic green, barely distinguished from brown at first, into an emerald hue and finally to the deep color of complete development The annual recurrence of this manifestation of nature seems to have a stronger Influence on the boy and man than cn the girl or woman. At any rate it is the male who seems fo feet more strongly the urge cf the vernal season and to yearn for the open fields and the silent forests that so insistently call to him at a time when he often feels that there should be in the world no such prosaic thing as the necessity of
making a livins
But vacation time dees not call to the male alone the gentier sex also being susceptible, but it is nature in a gentler guise that calls to them, bringing dreams of strolls bv the seaside, hammocks in the shade and moonlight on the river, smade still more magical by the Etrain of a guitar or the sound of a'tenor voice and even visions of a fairy prince. Vacation time is romance time no less for the maiden no less than for the ytmth and It is a kindly Mother Nature that contributes as much happiness in the contemplation of what it may bring as in he. fulfillment of the promises it holds when it calls, for there is a great deal of fun In preparation. One occasionally hears of persons who never have
EASY MONEY The name which springs most readily to the Hps of Americans when mention is made of men who played on credulity and other human failings. Is that t f P. T. l'.arnum. The author of the Humbugs of the World knew and practiced every method and device by means of which the gullible public can be separated from Iu money. Hestless and energetic in mind and body he found no exploit tco difficult or hazardous. Indeed, in the language of the day one may say that "Hazard'" should have been Harnum's middle name. Pygmies, giants, and poodle dogs: grizzly bears, white whales, and elephants; ffeaks and celebrities of all kinds; museums nnd three-rlug circuses there was little which he could not make people want very much to see; and for their seeing cf which he always extracted a price. He found rest, it Is said, only In action; and action only brought him mofe fume and money. But It is doubtful whether his firae would have been enduring and wide-spread bad he not "given the people oniething worth the price cf admission. Even if his Zulu princes were not always of royal Zulu blood, even If his fat men did not always measure up to their excessive girth as shown on the bill-boards, Phineas T. Harnum's name Is not among the list cf famous Importers. In the game of playing on men's desire for the strange nd unique Mr. Barnum has today a rival who at lcaat In one respect beats the world-famous show, man at his own game. Not in the height cf all his financial glory did be latter ever pocket so much cola of the realm on one show as Mr. Tex ftlckanl deposited In the bank after the gate receipts from the big fight, had been counted. Barnum never staged an attraction before a million-dollar crowd of spectators. He fell far short of this. It may be that there is more money in the sport of the roned arena than there is in the buslners-of the legitimate menagerie. By some grange process of calculation it may be possible to pr6ve that if a threering cfrcus is worth oO cents to 6ee, then a prize fight ought "to be worth $50. Which does not keep the rest of us from creditiag Mr. Barnum with a good, bit of world! wisdom when he said something to the effect about one being born every minute.
