A YOUNG MAX'S FANCY "Curious" writer to n newspaper atkitig why ice cr,eara doesn't drop in price no wthat all its separate ingredients have dropped. Jhe reton, O Curious is beaute so many Ice cream patrons are young and unmarried. Millions of gallons of cream are bougnt each and every evening by young men out with "the girl." What chance is there that they will start a buyers' strike? buyers' strikes are for pinched and desperate married folk, and have to do with such prosy, unromantic commodities as clothes and canned tomatoes. The crafty makers cf ice cream know that all limits are off when a young man and his particular Queen of Sheba step into a palace of frosty sweets. The voung man's fear of being thought a "tightwad" or a "pill" is the ice cream dealer's best bet that prices won't tome down to pre-war levels. Not, at least, for several whiles. Indeed, the ice cream man is thinking seriously of not dropping them at all, but cf making his war prices do for two wars the last one and the next one. says Leslie's Magazine.

And when life is bo, when the love between man nd his soul's bride is always a beginning and is never, never an ending, then the by-products If it are kinship with all the world, brotherhood with every created thing, duty, service, high ambiticn. But the Song of Songs melody in life comes from no eager strumming on the strings of sense, from no beauty, no fine rainment, no emphasis on place and power, but enly from a catching of the harmony that sings all too faintly, 3.11 too briefly in that first moment of awakening that makes of otherwise common-place men and women an incarnate longing for the greater something that lies back of all beauty, all art, all music, all regal words that send their flaming arrows across our leaden skies. For love is the delight of the spirit in its spirit mst.e. There is only bitterness and pain for those who know it not.

A NEEDED SAFETY CAMPAIGN Secretary of War Weeks speaks an opinion that has ben forming in the public mind for some time in declaring that there are "too many" mishaps in the government's aerial service and calling tor a fafety campaign

! in that branch. Although sacrifices seem inevitable I in the caue of progress, one still must think a single life

as "too many if here is any metnou wunm reason oi preventing such lotsWhen Secretary Weeks gives it as his opinion that the recent mishap at the Aberdeen proving grounds, in which seven men lost their lives, was due to faulty mechanism, he refers to one caute of such tragedies that is avoidable. Another cause is the spirit of daring that takes unnecessary risks. While there still are many things to learn in aerial navigation, enough has been learned in the science to render unnecessary many of hte risky flying experiments that were rgarded as useful at first. At any rate, the loss of IS lives in the army air service by four mishaps in the last few weeks is enough to create a country-wide demand for a safety campaign in flying.

WOMEN AND EEAUTY If the 20 year old Baltimore girl who tried to kiU herself because she had not the beauty to hold her lover could be made beautiful a while she might learn how much more frcm women men want than mere beauty. Men tire of beauty quickly as they are captured by it. Those who have to do with beauty in wholesale lots managers of chorus girls, artists who deal with professional models, judges in beauty contests, find themselves turning from paragons of physical perfection to nice women that they know not paragons of perfection for sheer relief from the boredom of beauty. The woman who despises beauty is a fool. But she who trusts to it wholly is a bigger fool. Beauty is useful to attract, powerless to hold, except when blended with finer, nobler, sterner, more enduring qualities. Beauty should be the possession cf the whole race. Its presence here and there is a reminder from above that we were all meant to be divine, but that we have mislaid the celestial heritage in chasing unbeautiful things luxury, and ease, and power. But the possessor the beauty, often is unable to fulfill the pledge. The body nevar can meet the soul's promissory notes. The man who marries a beauty sometimes finds that he has underwritten the liabilities of a mental and spiritual bankrupt. The woman who lasts in a man's heart is the woman who gives a new and exquisite meaning to his life. She allies herself with the 6un and stars to rivet his Imagination in bonds a3 light as the cob-web's gossamer threads and as strong as the binds of steel that hold a battleship together. She is a music that i always around him, a fragrance that permeates him. Not the weakness and folly that mere beauty often precipitates, but the health-and power flowing from a spirit gently challenging a man to do his best, always, istto be found in her. With such a wcma.n, love, marriage, nome, children whatever may befall is but the beginning of a mutual consecration.

0VEEC0MING THE TURK The danger of temporarizing with the Tur Is again demonstrated in the situation In which Great Britain and France find themselves In dealing with Mustapha Kemal Pasha and his followers, the Turk nationalists, who have created a stalemate in Asia Minor oy holding out against the Greek forces. King Constantine is said to have expressed confidence that Greece will ultimately defeat the Turks in a decisive manner, but there is little reason to believe that this ran be done without the aid of Great Britain and probibly of France. These nations may have to do finally what they would better have done when they gave Greece permission to engage against the TurksGreat Britain has refrained from active participation with the Greeks against the Turks, probably because of the threat of the Turks to involve Musselmans in middle Asia and India against British rule in those districts. Great Britain plainly has been brought to the point of making a choice between two evils in the

Near East.

THE GOOD OLD U. S. A. We had hoped that unspeakable skunk "Big Bill"

Haywood, who deserted his deluded fellow-criminals at

the prison door and ran away to Russia leaving them to face the music alone, would never return to these Unit

ed States.

"Big Bill" If properly named would be known as "Bad Bill," and there are those who call him "Yellow Bill." which, It would seem, is properly descriptive, for now that he finds food 'scarce and living hard in Russia, he wants to desert Lenine and Trotzky. just as he did his own comrades here in the shadow of .the penitentiary. But it is inded laughable to note that "Big Bill" finds the "heaven of Russia," to which ha fled, less desirable than the stone wall of a prison in poor old, down-trodden, capitalistic America. THE DEADLIEST load is carried by the gun that isn't loaded.

GERMANY holds one world's championship. She has received more ultimatums than any other country.

A FALLING off In stunt, aviators is reported.
