WJirWAIIHQ FEDERAL WASTE. If anybody harbored the Idea that President Hard-

lng Is an easy-going man, ready to let things drift, : they ere being dlsHusloned. It la true that he prefers to gat along without friction, if that is possible, but ha does net shun a clash, if it isunarodaMe, and ;whn he make up bis mind it ia fixed. It ha been a part of the announced policy cf the administration to reform the departmental serrice ot pie government to the end that there might be both economy aad greater efficiency. This meant that 'force would be reduced and more work would be xpected of those who remain. It has developed that, fcy mean of wire with which bureau officers are familiar, it waa sought to nullify the purposes of the president in this regard. When Mr. Harding became liware of the course proceedings were taking he drew ils club. He announced anyone detected of Interfer?!ng with or seeking to obstruct the efforts to reduce waste would be instantly separated from his Job. " Quite a number of persons in Washington now are aware that the president has backbone. They do not heller that he Is talking, merely. Yet the situation TJiat confronted the president is what might have been t-xpected. But the federal government should require every person on the pay roll to render services uual to the compensation. If there is duplication of departments, the overlap should be removed. In short, government service should be put on a business basisThat Is what the administration is trying to do, and ;lbat is what the public wants. It hae been known for long that the administrative departments were conducted in a loese and wasteful manner. Heretofore selfish interest has blocked reform. The fact that economy is now Imperative has leinforced the demand for the Inauguration of efficiency and the country ls with the president In his efforts.

NO " COLO 2TEL HOUSE" NEEDED Political observers at the capital, who had been vondering who would be the "Colonel House" of the new administration admitted quite generally that Mr. Witeon, owing to bla peculiar temperament, reQuired the services of a "confidential man," sort ot liaison officer, to keep him in touch with important information. The public viewed with soma justifiable uneasiness the entrusting of apparently delicate and rioat vital missions to an unofficial personage, but there la reason to believe now that Colonel House displayed much discretion and perhaps saved his chief from mistakes that might have been made. There were numerous unofficial ambassadors and special secret agents of Mr. Wilson ot whom this could not be said, as developments regarding their unfortunate activities snowed. Later Colonel House was officially appointed a representative of the United States government at the peace conference, but his fame has always been associated with his work as a purely private and personal agent of Mr. Wilson President Harding's natural inclination is to follow the precedents established for the conduct of his high office and to perform all its duties in the pre

scribed manner and spirit of the constitution, but he

would have little use anyway for personal, private agents because he ls accustomed to mix with the outside world, to meet all sorts and conditions of men and obtain newa and views at first hand. A diplomatic connecting link between the executive and legislative branches of the government is not required. If Mr. Harding wants to talk to a man he does so face, to face, and not through a third party. And Washington correspondents say he recently talked ia extremely plain terms to some gentlemen who were acting as brakes on the wheel of progress. Granting that a Colonel House was a necessary appendage of the previous administration, we may be glad that President Harding requires no such assistance.

LOOKING AROUND at the rest of the world and seeing that a peaceful Mexico 1 far out of style probably is what prompted action of a group of Carrantlitas who are reported to have renewed trouble Just south of the border.

A CHICAGOAN claims the invention of a musical instrument that will revolutlonlie opera. Which inspires the hope that at last there ls to be an orchestral accompaniment that will not drown the voices of he singers.

WE HOPE those pirates now credited with per ating off our eastern coast, will be mors definite than Captain Kidd was with relation to the burial place of the treasure.

For many years there has been a discussion among medical scientists as to the greatest contributing factor in the remarkable span of life as enjoyed by the Bulgarians, the longest lived people on the face of the earth. It was the opinion of Metchnikotf, the great scientist, who was perhaps more familiar with the habits of the Bulgarian people than any other professor, that buttermilk, has more to do with long life in these people than any other factor. The Bulgarians, of whom there are 3,000 centenarians, are a buttermilk drinking people; this fact was brought out. Buttermilk for many years has been recognized by medical science as an important factor in the prolongation of life. Buttermilk as prepared by the Hammond Dairy Company is a pasteurized product, developed from whole milk and cream and as fresh and pure as the mountain dew. It is a most delicious drink and satisfies most when one is hot and all tired out. Order A Bottle Now Ask for it at your Soda Fountain or Restaurant

A new way to put up berries

Here is a new wav of putting up berries for inter use. It is so easy and simple that even an inexperienced cook can follow it safely and successfully. It is calle3 Lorain Oven Canning, because it is done in the oven of a gas range equipped with the Lorain Oven Heat Regulator. Select fresh, ripe berries. Pick clean, wash and put into sterilized glass jars. Pour in enough syrup, made of one cup sugar to four cups of water, to nil within inch of top. Put on tops loosely, then place jars in oven. Set Lorain" wheel at 250 degrees and forget all about it for one hour. Then remove jars, screw tops on tightly and that's all there is to it. The result will be raspberries, gooseberries, blueberries or blackberries for pies, sauces, desserts, that will taste as though just picked.

You can put up all kinds of fruit and vegetables the same way, just as easily, and have a preserve shelf loaded down with good things to eat all during the long Winter months when such things are luxuries.

Gas Ranges

are equipped with the "Lorain" Oven Heat Regulator. You should see these beautiful and economical stoves. They represent the last word in range construction. Let us tell you about "Lorain" and how it reduces the hours of kitchen work to the minimum. Ask about whole meal cooking in the oven and about putting up vegetables, fruits and berries the "Lorain" way. We have a book for you on "LORAIN" OVEN CANNING. May we send it to you? If so, write for it, or, tetter still, drop in and get it.
