-DEMPSEY FAIRY TALES IRELAND BY DAXIEL OCON-XrXL J STAFF CORRESPONDENT I. K. SERVICE TjUELIX. June ;:3 Ireland is backing Jack Dempsey to beat Gf org-i3 Carpenter to the l3?t ppr.ny. If th French fighter wins t he-re ar Koir.fc to t-5 a lot of empty pocket1 in this oun'tv, but the universal opinion is: Ilow can a man with th- numr of Pcmpsey lost? In the agricultural difrn-t s fom jjnrn even sold thoir farms and cattlo to ra-ise money to waftr on th fieht. Kor the time being: Pcmrf-'y rankj with Pf Valera in Iri?h intorest . So great was the flood of D"mrfy -money that the hook makers were lnundated and closed thv'.r hook., ma Si. rig r.ece&eary to send vagwrs to England. fcm b ts were m.ide at. even money in the beginning but before th- boo'-, had closed th odd? were ten t one with the American on the inc end. If Ptmpsey wins and decides to vi.-i! Ireland he is assured of a. welcome of a price. One hears rr.arvrlous stories of Pernjssy in Inland, especially his generosity toward.- the, Iri.-h cause. It all are to bo believed. Pempsey must bae the wealth of John L. Rockleller. - It Is common go..ip in iVjnty Ciare That Dfrnpsfy has ci-ntr:buted a m:lJ;on dollars to the Irish cause. The people of County Clare are convinced that Dempsey spends his spare time j-elring the Irish republican movement 'nd that he. attends every meeting at -nhlch I Vale -a spoke hen the Utter m the U nited s?t - Also there are ston. ? about PempywyS immense s-trength. tonic ot liuc.il sound like inventions by Baron Munchausen. Yankee visitors satisfy the unositv of th- Irish with wild exaggerations. One told how Pempsey placed twelve men in a row. tiuck the frit and knocked the whole twelve down. It was half an Ivur before s. mo of them retoveredVonsciousness. E'-cordir.sr to the teller of the tnle. Jack will take the best wishes of Ireland into the ring with him on Saturday. A group of prize Ting followers i.i Tirptrary sent Pempsey a sprig of white heather picked on the hig-heM peak of the Gilties in the full moon and everyone knows that there is no charm luckier than th!. If Pempsey loses after receiving this charm. Tiprerary will be?m to think that anything is possible.

J. BART CAMPBELL,

rSTFF CO"RESMCENT I. N. SERVICE VA S H I O i i T O N . June 23 The administration plan for a sweep reorganization of the federal prohibition system is to abolish the supervising enforcement egent who now has charge of two or three states and to enter prohibition enforcement in each state entirely in the hands of its prohibition director. The powers cf each of the. 4 5 state prohibition directors are being so enlirged that h will not only have complete supervision over the detection and prosecution of evaders or violators of the federal dry laws, but also of the anti-drug act within the borders of his state. The. plan involves the creation cf many new federal jobs and the expenditures of hundreds of thousands of dollars.

many think that his statement settles the matter, but he overlooks all fact m the . ;ise. Kirt-t of ail. by arrangement of K-v. Smithson's followers, the ir.n tiiu- uas called to order by Glenn Smith, who is mM and has not been iha'i'tnan of any bard. In the Christian church in Hammond all Kpneral meetings are called to order and presided over by the regularly elected chairman of the general board. In his ah.-ence a .luirman pro t.i may be chosen This regular procedure w a.- t - tally violated. Second. the meet ins on Mnda'

evening wan not a regular board me-t-! ing nor a regular congregational meet-j nil. but waj a special meeting of th ! congregation called for a f-pecia; pur- j pose a: the request of th- board ofl arbitration with tie detinue under-1

standing that with the consent of the regular chairman and C. M. Smithson, this n:o.!:nc was to be in charge of two members of the arbitration board. Kindred and Zellar. The meeting was

recjuested by the arbitration board fori

the purpose of presenting the line of action which had been agreed upon bv Kev. Smithson. the arbitration board and the leaders of tHte who are opposing Rev. Smithson. This understanding was violated hn both the a r b. t ra t ion board and the regular chairman were disregarded m the mat

ter cf the call to order anj the presiding in the meeting. Third, this meeting being a special meeting called for a special purpose, could not transact other business. The matter of voting out of office a number of church officers at this meeting was. therefore, entirely illegal. This action was also illegal because these officers were regularly elected in the regular annual business meeting the

first Thursday in February with a resolution clearly stating that they are to serve for one uar and for one year only. They cannot posf.biy be thus summarily thrown out of office without definite charges of incompetency, or immorality, or neglected duty. This action was. therefore, totally illegal. The statement that the action taken against Rev. Smithson by myself and others is engendered by pite and hate will scarcely be believed by anyone who is personally acquainted with those who have lead in this opposition. It is certainly plain to "verybody that no one would undergo the thiflgs which w-e have had to endure unless 'her" was principle at stake. in a Christian church and among the Christian churches there is no authority other than the local officers of the local church. In spiritual matters the elders of the church are the so'e and

only authority in matter? of this kind. As elders it i.i not only our privilege but our duty, and first duty, to saf-.--puard the church in a matter of this

Pkind.

There is this unanswered question

Since it must be vry clear to everyone that three as eminent men as Kindred, Graffton and Zellar would riot .'.are present an adverse decision in a matter of this kind unless they were absolutely forced to do .-o by the evidence presented, why then should Smithson's followers be so anxious to be rid of the arbitration board composed of such men before a decision, ba M en the evidence, can be rendered '.' A. DICKINSON. Chairman "f General Board.
