The Standard Steel Car Co. ushered in an era of great industrial development in Hammond. It has employed a sufficient number of men to make the sacrifice of the more distant future
worth while. HOW HAMMOND IS Hl'HROFXDED
Hammond's only opportunity for
growth lies southward, if the country
club dpaj goes through. If the co"un
try club sale Is made, tho fact must be
remembered that nearly a square mile
of territory is eliminated from possl Me development.
This la in addition to another
square mile of territory that 'has al ready been acquired by the forest pre
serve just south of Hegewisch and Burnham; territory that has forever
been eliminated from possible indus
trial development.
And this is in addition to a half of a
mile of frontage that has been acquir
ed along the state line, on the Illinois side, opposite Robertsdale. In fact
fhe Cook County Forest preserve now has close to three- miles of frontage along the Indiana-Illinois state line.
That means three miles of barrier. FIRST SALE A GREAT BENEFIT. The first acquisitions of property for Forest Preserve purposes were of 130 acres in 'extent. This purchase was far enough south so that it would not Interfere' wtih the growth and development of the community for fifty years. But then followed the sale of 60 acres by A. M. Turner, ten acres by Harvey Gostlin and now th whole country club property is to be taken over if plans materialize. It is proposed to make of the Hammond Country Club a public course of eighteen holes. ttut the country club land is not covered with forest. It is meadow
an by no stretch of the imagination
could the forest preserve conrniiBSloners .purchase this property and adhere to the original purposes of ths Forest preserve act. WEST HAMMOND HARD HIT 1 In "West Hammond w'heris the fait is really appreciated that this purchase means relegating West Hammond to a minor position among the cities of Thornton township there Is considerable concern about the matter. West Hammondltes point to the fact that the city will never be able to u-ve-lop farther south than Carroll street." That henceforth it must develop westward; that westward development is out of the Question north of One Hundred and Fifty-fourth street and west of Burnham avenue tht land is an impassable, swamp.
