CORBETT DEFENDS TRAINING PRACTICES OF CARPENTIER
1 ET J AiTCS J. COTIBE.TT (Former HeAvywelgrh.t Ctmnplon of the World.) (Written Expressly for the I. N. S (Copyrlgrht. 1921, by I. N. Sen-ice.) NEW TORK, June 23. Attempts to elza vp Gftorffoa Carpentler by the showing of ar.y of his sparring partners a.ro unfair to the French oharapion s.s I ea it. I noticed where tha Journe-Wein-rt bout was mentioned in this connection but I can't see for the l'.fe of roe why Journerj Blowing- 6houlJ ha.vw s.nything to do with CarpentUr or his chances against D&mpsey. Carpcntler can stop Journee with one punch and any time he wants to. He simply uses tte big fellow to
rough it with, him. Ha lets Journee i
and all the rest of his sparring mate.3 hammer bim about the ring for he needs that kind of work. If he didn't want Journeo to hit him, take It from me. the big fellow wouldn't be able to lay a clove on Georges. Joe Jeanette Js the only one of Carpfntier's sparring matei who lias class
enough to begin to make the French battler use his ring science but you never see this done In G-rges vuBllc workouts. Carpntle-r feels that he has bepa subjected to a lot of unjust criticism because of his system of training and he haa had this lmpresjion for so long a time that he went into his sht-U farther than ever. That's one reason why -no ttas constantly refused to show more than a flash of his real ability. Today training activities were resumed at Man-hasswt after a two ciys lay-off with the exception of road work wbicii Georges did Tuesday and Wednesday. The slight rest was a welcome one to Carpentier but with Just ten days remaining between now and the date when he wilt sLrp into the ring at Jersey City the French title holder will whip things up. I got the idea of what Georges Intends to do trom a remark dropped Inadvertently by Joe Jeanette yesterday. "Been takln' It easy for a couple of days." said Jeanette, "but George will Klve us plenty to do from now on."
