MASON

TO GET TEST IH BOUT ON LEONARD PROGRAM

SOUTH BEND. Ind., Juna 22. Indiana boxing fans are wondering whether or aat Frankia Mason, claimant of the flyweight title, '.'.as gone back. Although the Hoos.br continues to defeat opponents It is "be general belief that he is not the man he was a year ago. For this reason trhftne, will be many Indiana fans en dck at Floyd Fitzsimmons' championship show. Benton Harbor, July 4, to see Mason battle Jimmy Kelly, the Chicago Syweight flash. Mason trimmed Kelly by a slight shade- Just a year ago at East Chicago. It was a close and thrilling bittie, however, and the champion only emerged ahead by a small margin bercause, of his greater ring knowledge. r Whether -ho can repeat this is a qu-s- ' t.ion up In local sporting circles and i this has caused great interest to be i shown in the fracas. fcfcV MASOX IS POPULAR. However, Mason is one of the most popular little boxers to ever pull on the gloves and has many friends throughout northern Indiana. He has one of the greatest ring records la the books and fought many of his bouts here. He defeated such boxers as Joe Mandeil, Bobby Armstrong, Frank ie Jaumattl and Pal Moore in this city. In metting Kcliy the Hoosier is going up against a dangerous opponent as KeJly has recently fought Pal Moore two draws and defeated Pete

Herman while the latter was bantam- ,

weight champion. Kelly and Mason make a pretty contest to watch as both are fast as lightning, clever and full of pep. KELLY GETS START HERE. Kelly will be remembered in South

Bend as he got Ills start at the Oliver

theater here a year ago last winter when he received $25 Xor boxing a preliminary with Jimmy Duffy, then a popular bantam. Although this was Kelly's first professional bout he stopped Duffy in the fifth round with a whirlwind attack which impressed local fans. He was matched back with Johnny Hagon In the semi-final to the Mason-Jaumattt bout and again won the decision by carrying the fight to Hagon. This should make a fitting wlndup to such an attractive card as the Benny Leonard-Sailor Freedman battle. Many northern Indiana fans are planning to take In the show. Local fans have been fortunate in obtaining the best seats in the arena for this show. Floyd Fitzsimmons was de-s-irous of giving the Indiana fans first choice as ha realizes that a largo portion of his crowd comes from this state. So he selected the best ringside seats and sent them along wirh the first two rows Tn the $10 and $5 section? to this city. They are now on sale, at Hull and Calnon. Mclnerny and Warner. Goldie Mann and Goat's cigar stores and by Eugene Kessler, of The Tribune.

BETTING ON CARPENTIER

BY TAD (Written for the International N. NEW YORK, June Willi Ritchie, former lightweight champion, cf the world. Intends to take the Carpen tier end of the betting July 2. In an interview out we-st the otb.fr day Willie gave his reasons. He says that he cant r.guro Dompsty a 3 to 1 shot over a good man l.kc- Carpentier when boxers such as Mcehan, Brennan and Miske went the limit with him. "Dempsey is a good hitter,'" savS Willie, "but when he failed to drop Brennan in the Garden. I figured that he had gone back a lot. Brennan couldn't box as Carpentier can. and. if Dempsey misses the Frenchman four or five times, he is liable to los,e confidence. When he loses that h forgets his aggressiveness and 13 outpointed or dropped for the count. "Carpentier is a good, big man. I saw him after I fought Welsh on the other niMf and he's as game as a pebble. He'll have to be flattened to lose . "He has more boxing experience than Dempsey. He-'s been In the rics 12 years and it's nothing new t him. "Ho has no title to defend therefore he won't bo a3 worried as Dempsey is bound to be. "Dem.psey's extra weight will handicap him July 2. If the fight were to a finish Ii say the extra weight would help him. Jeff'3 xlra weight always bothered his opponents. This is a short distance, bout and Dempsey will need more peed than weight. "Carpentier Is a good bet a! those odds and I'm betting the short end."
