may, and eometinies do. embroil our government la foreign quarrels. In effecting this financial agreement. President Harding establishes a precedent which should have farreaching consequences. It could hardly be denied that principle which can be given temporary force by voluntary understanding between private interests and the government, could be permanently established by law. No money should be loaned to foreign governments or privately to individuals cr groups except with full Knowledge and sanction of our government. If the loan Is for legitimate purposes it would meet with no objection frcm American authorities. If it bids fair to be employed in attempted revolutions. In revolt against constituted authority, or In any enterprlso assistance for which might endanger the peace of the United
i States, it should pass the scrutiny and Judgment of our
government or be refused. That the government should have this authoilty to safeguard the American people from possible foreign entanglements is so clearly reasonable as to admit of no dispute.
rOFJEIGN LOANS Of late considerable interest was aroused by the announcement that the president had entertained and consulted with J. P. Morgan and other International bankers. An agreement reached at that conference f of broader' significance and import than might appear superficially. It is reported that the president reached an agreement with these financial interests that all ransactions i r an International character entered Into by American bunkers with private banks abrcad or with foreign
governments, will first be submitted to government for approval.
MOUNT VERNON'S OWNERSHIP A bill introduced in congress for the purchaso of Mount Vernon, the heme of George 'Washington, revives a project that has been agitated, off and on, for many years. When the Mount Vernon Ladles' Associa' tion of the Union took over the property In 18u9 It had to expend thousands cf dollars for repairs. The house was falling to pieces. The grounds were described a? a "jungle." Many attempts had been made to ln-
jduce the federal government to purchase the property, 'but in vain, and had it not been for these public spirited women the place would have gone to ruin. J Certainly no fault can be found with the way this (association cf women has discharged Its sacred trust.
and whatever action is taken by the government there can be only feelings of gratitude toward them for their patriotic service bo faithfully performed during the many years of their guardianship.

The Passing Show A mm U In a dasa all THE time he is in lore. That'a WIIV the poor chap imag-lnes that HE really aked her to marry him. IT probably la a good thine THAT the old fashioned names have PRETTY much gone out of style AND the nakedest-looklns girl WHE.V ehe Is dressed for the street IV all our acquaintance has THE oldest-fashioned name makes IS laugh whenever we see her. WE rsad that Caruso is to return here next fall SUREST thijijr you know HERE Is where the money Is. SO many of the girls are ahap.ed LIKE clothespins that In our IGNORANCE we often wonder HOW they keep their SKIRTS up without suspenders. CHATS WITH YOUR GAS MAN As the title suggests we want these advertisements to be in the nature of friendly talks between us. Our purpose in this is to tell you certain facts about our business that will, we believe, clear away many misunderstandings. We confess that prejudice against the business has been fostered by letting gross errors go uncorrected, but all this is going to be changed so far as we are able to change it. We shall try in these advertisements to answer every question about the gas business that has puzzled you. If we seem to be overlooking any, kindly write us about it and it will be answered. Read these advertisements as they appear from time to time. You will not only find them interesting and informative; but we believe they will cause you to see the public utility business, particularly the gas business, in a new light.
