MORE ON THE MILK QUESTION Editor Times The Indiana Farmers Guide, the best farm paper published in Indiana, wrote me in regard t the skim milk of the M!ik Producer's Cooperating Marketing company troinii down the sewers. They wanted to know what I thought about it and what could be done. I wrote them my side of it and I think In justice to our side o the question you should publish this. "Vour inquiry in re Kind to the skim
milk goim? in the sewers of Gary and Indiana Harbor in , a fact and a lamentable fact that' It Is so. I do not know just how much Is going to feed the fishes but there Is a lot of it and the principal reason is that the cost of labor in doins: Uuugs is more than can be gotten out of the product. I wanud s-i'nie of the skim mi'k on the furiii to be broucht back by the truck that hauled our milk over and the cost of getting it back on the farm was more than the milk was worth. Therefore waste. There is a mighty sight of wate m this country on account of the hih cost of doing tilings, about all the help we can uet on the farms in northwestern Indiana !s some old down and outer that is no good any where and especially on the farm. Thesv good young fellows that we t'fcd to 'get to work on the farms are no more to be seen driving a 4-horse nam or milking the Holstein cows. They are driving a truck or street car In the city, where they can get more money and shorter hours than a farmer can giv at present prices of his product. "The whole situation Is bad. It takes two bushels of oats for a hair cut and shave; 25 bush"! of oats for S hours work for a carpenter. If the wife wants
to be dressed up like her city sister, It will take 60 bushel of oats to buy a. hat. The farmer sells his wool at from 3 to 23 cents per pound and the loud smelling foreigner gets $1.25 per hour to make the woolen clothes. At tiiis time it will take about the price of 10 cow hides to buy a pair of shoes & etc. What has this got to do with skim milk going down the sewer. "Everything. Cost more for labor than the farm product worth. Manufacturers produce what the market demands and can be sold at a profit, our cows give milk 2 or 3 times a day. whether or not there is a demand. We put on the maiktt what the demand talis for at about 5 cents per quart for the month of April and the people of Chicago, Hammond and Gary pay 14 cents per quart, who gets the other 0 o nts. Truck drivers for hauling milk to market. Milk wagon drivers. Cost of sieraUzing. Ilottles & t. and proiit of distribution. The milk wagon drivers have a union and get $45 1" r week and commission, which in some cases runs up to $60 per week. .Supposing the men, women and children cn the farms got wages to correspond to the milk wagon drivers, what would be the cost of producing milk. The Milk Producers Co-operating Marketing company is in its infancy. The .-'up ply of milk run a way for a month or two. We were organized and sold stock to the amount of $300, OdO, but the business was so big that was not capital enough to handle it. We arc now organized for two million and are
so-.ng to build plants to use up all the product of the dairy In condensed milk, powdered milk, cottage cheese & etc. Providing we can hire men to do the work so it will pay us to do it. We tried to put some of this .kim milk into cottage cheese and all the dealers would give for it was 1 cent ;., r pound that would not pay cost of l i e.. From the farmers standpoint or-; a n i labor is very unreasonable and g i v them plenty of rope it won't take them long for to hang themselves.

Smart Summer Style by the World s Clercrest Creator of Youthful Mode
Summer ra the Rrr, with th ra1 frarrance of grass and flowers ajid a.11 outdoors brings warmly to the heart the call for things frivolous and fluffy, the dashaway drsses that will Bland in such gcxxi tead at seashore, mountain or lak; that will cool, clean and a,bOTS all cbarraing. Imported rir-m is my first choice, and red the favorite rhade for mademoiselle this season, for red and brown in ginghams had an early appeal at Palm Beach and promise to be the dominant shades in this material. Red particularly is a happy choice, for there is hardly anything more chic than these selff-ame checks In their piquant loveHrtesa.
To set off the TfttJs crettlon Illustrated, I hare combined it with whtte organdy as an apron panel, on which I have appliqued bias 5-trtps of the gingham. The bolero jacket effect set off with lace vestee and short sleeves Is always de.sirable, and. I think you will agTee in this case; quite typical of Snmmertime thonght. Black velvet ribbon adds Just the right finishing touch at eTbows, nck and waist.

"Heavens, alive," you say, "what kind of a Suit can you get at $10?" Well, in most places you wouldn't get any suit at all. In fact, if you were to go into some stores and ask for a ten dollar suit you would precipitate a riot. Readers, stick to the above statement. "Good Suits at $10," and all we ask you to do is to come and see them.
