WEALTHY WOMAN . A KLEPTOMANIAC Strange Story Develops Out of Arrest of Chicago Woman Today flNTFsNATiONAL KEwS SERVICE CHICAGO, May 21. Possessing wealth, home, husband and children apparently every material thing necessary to happiness Mrs. Joseph S. Hell, wife of a rich Chicago banker and investment broker, disguised herself as a maid and by her own confession, obtained employment In ths homes of others that she might loot them of their treasure. Today she sits a prisoner in ja'l here and smiles only a pathetic, twisted smile when asked why shfl did It. Her husband was to attempt today to obtain her rcleise on bond. Meanwhile police and medical authorities seek to solve the riddle presented by Mrs. Hell, whose arrest has revealed a dual career as society

woman and "raffles." The theory held by rollcs and by physicians who have examined her is that she is a victim of kleptomania induced by an automobile accident sustained several months ago. Hell said he had known his wn waa away from home a great deal during the dsy but bad understood she was attending auctions. Articles whlrh she brought home he said, sfif told him she had purchased at auctions. Several ttmes. Hell declared, he had given his wife checks to pay for goods She said ?he had bought at auctions. "T don't know why she lias don this terrible thing," Hell said, "but I'll stick by her to the end." Mrs. Hell is the mother of four children, one of them a daughter, who Is married. It wag revealed after her rret that she is again about to become a mother.
