Jack Lch will keep an anxious er
on tfe weather tomorrow for things a.re rainor lust rlaht at present to
mak his opening motorcycle race meet at Vorter Sunday a howling success. A HtUe rain would not hurt the track but It really Isn't necessary. The promoter was busy today Hiving the Porter Speedway its first dose ot the new h-tmicaJ treatment which Is -aid to be as affective as oil in laying the dust but does not hare the otejotlonable features of olU Sunday's irowd will probably be the first in northern Indiana to witness motorJcle races from which the dust nuisance has been eliminated. Leech has also gone to considerable expense In making the roads to the Speedway. Lake and Porter counties rare repejred the short-out roads be
tween Oary ana the oia .Mineral prings grounds and Leech has markJ thees so that those who go by sutomobile and motorcycle will have trouble In picking the smoothest r;dlng. Poor highways east of Gary last year discouraged hundreds who i'. ould otherwise hare attended the laces. People living In Hammond anJ -djolnlng territory are advised to take Summer street U Gary and follow the igns. The good road lies through ;ary. Miller, East Gary, Crocker and .TcCooL Walter Korn, the Indian spaed merhant, is In Hammond tuning up tor Sunday's events. Everyone knows list with Korn in the game the others '-ill have to stir themselves. Word .-Iso came today that three crack rldrs from the Excelsior factory would
e on nana Sunday. There will of -'urse be a good representation of
:ocal favorites with Paul Anderson making his bow as a H&rley-Davldaon i lder. There wfU be new racing types of machines of all makes and it is pevullar that each dealer thinks he has something up his sloeve. which will knock them all cold." The common tatexnent is: "Just you wait till Sunday. Im not letting: anything out now ut I know how things are going to :urn out." A a matter of fact they ion't know for each dealer Is putting omethlng in the race without knowing what the other fellow has. Ieech xpeota it to be a series of the "flghtinest" races ever staged.

BT JAMES J. CORBETT t Former Heavyweight Champion of the "World.) .Written Expressly for the I. N. S.) (Copyright, 1921, by 1. N. Service.) NEW YORK, May 20. My attention i.as been called to a story sent out of tlantlc City quoting me to the effect hat I expect Dempsey to defeat Carrentier. I want to say to ray readers that tliis story was unauthorired. I have . -t formed an opinion regarding the outcome of the big battle July 2. 1 iave never yet seen Carpentier put up his hands in real action and regard- : .-ss of my past experiences and familiarity with boxers, I would not atmpt to predict the result at Jersey ity without having first studied oou oxers. Any report of this nature that iloes not appear under my signature, therefore must be considered erroneous. I hare seen Jack Dempsey Jn action. When he won the championship at To"edo, I was at the ringside. Naturally t feel that I know quite a bit about him. But cyclonic though he is a man capable of dealing out and probably Just as capable of assimilating terrlflo punishment there Is no rule built upon hearsay, physical measurements or cold type in the record books that could lead me to pick him as the winner, without the chance to stuas the French champion In action first. Georges Carpentier comes to us with a reputation as the greatest fighter Europe has ever turned out. He must be something of a punisher himself to have dealt out the terrific lacings he has handed to a number of bulky men.
In ail fairness to him, therefore, it would be folly for any man to attempt to Judge him sight unseen. Many boxing critics and Just plain devotees favor Dempsey to win. There Is a generous sprinkling of students of the game however who like Carrentier's chances best and there are many others on the fence. Let us con. sider their views. Those Who favor Dempsey build their arguments around these points: He Is Carpentler's physical superior. His rapid fire, rushing attack should weep Carpentier off his feet. His sledge-hammer blows will batter down the lad from France. His aggressiveness is a greater defense than Carpentier can boast of. But wait. The Carpentier faction has Its points to make, too: Here Is the wizard boxer of ths century, they tell us. Here Is a lad whose dazzling footwork will enable him to elude Denvpsey's rush. And while he Is stepping around Dempsey. tantalizing him with uncanny footwork, he will be driving heme telling punches wherever he finds an opening. Here is a boxer whose punches are also deadly; a borer who had toppled ver soma of the biggest men of his time and a boxer who comes to us unmarked. Thereby proving that he Is a master of defense. Why has he not a grand chance to win the championship? Why, indeed? Tou, and myself, can only guess as to the merits of these two men while we study them. We shall review thfir deeds in the ring and in due time will attempt to weigh their chances.

K. C'S SHAPING
UP FOR GAME
The Hammond K. of C.'s held a snappy little Infield practice last evening. In preparation for Sunday's big game with the strong club from South Chicago who at the present time are leading the K, of C. Suburban League. Following the practice session the team assembled for a spirited little meeting at the K. fo C. club rooms where plans were discussed for next Sunday's Important battle. Among other things that were outlined. Manager Helmbach announced that lie had engaged a police officer to keep the crowd back of the foul line and also to rid the players benches of everybody except tho men in uniforms and the managers of the respective teams. This certainly will be a decided improvement and will not only make Vi a pleasure for anyene to watch the game on a cle'ar field but will also enable the players to put up a better article of ball under more favorable conditions. Now the only thing we lack at Harrison park are the promised concrete posts with iron chains attached running from both sides of the back stop far out into right and left fields. If the board of public works would only get busy and order these put in before the season is half over it would help considerable to maks the the Harrison park diamond a regular place to play ball. Oroundkeeper Holt Is doing all he can to keep the diamond In shape under present conditions and If given the proper support from the Board of Works he wil show the city real baseball grounds before the season la very far advanced. The K. of Cm will hold their final workout tomorrow afternoon at Harrison park In preparation for Sunday's stiff argument and all players are requested to report at the club rooms not later than 1:30 so that practice can start at & reasonably early hour. After putting: on the finishing touches tomorrow everything will be in readiness for South Chicago and all the local players will be awaiting the umpire's announcement "Flay Ball." The game will be started promptly at 3 o'clock by an association umpire.

WHITING. Ind, May 20. The Whiting Maccabees will travel to East Chicago to play the K. C. I, who have a well balanced team equal to any In the county. The battery for the K. C. U, will be the Simon brothers who need no recognition as ball players in and around the Calumet region. The Maccabees who were the Polarlnesv in the few previous years also have a good team and who are out to .play any team In the county. This will be the Maccabees Initial appearance this season and who will undoubtfully try hard to cop the first one, gives the fans all the reason to believe there will be a real ball game at the Graver park Sunday, May 22.
COLUMBIA VS. RED SOX (BT CHUCK.) The Columbia A. C. showed Intelligent playing last Sunday In their battle with the Chicago Red Sox, beating them 12 to 4. It was an excellent showing for their opening game. Manager A. Lletran attended the Interstate League last Monday- evening and posted a game with the Chicago Konories who beat the Chicago Ked Sox two weeks ago by a small score. The Honories have strengthened their line-up considerably in the last two weeks by signing up Smith from the Dodgers Training and several other good semi-pro baseball players. The fans are guaranteed a fast clean gams. If the Columbia A. C. play as they did last Sunday the fans may expect to see another batting bee. They got two home runs, three two-base hits and eleven singles. The superb pitching of Romeo kept the Red Sux hits well scattered. The game for Sunday will start promptly at 3 o'clock. The battery for the C A. C. will be Romeo and Hudson and for the Honories will be Smith and Winsen. Come out and see this game because it will be worth seeing. f

From the Fight Camps NEW YORK. May 20. Carpentier is more concerned over his canine companion. Flip, than he is ovr the entire situation. When there is anything wrong with the Verdun doggie there is small chance for any newspaperman, no matter how persistent, to see the Frenchman.
Former service men called on Carpentier today asking that he attend one or two functions they were arranging. Georges was very courteous to them, but would not say when he would be able to honor tntm with his presence. The barbed wire defenses are attracting a lot ot attention around the Manhaeset camp. Groups of sightseers who never saw the fighter himself are crowding the place to get a glimpse of his "keen out" fence. At Atlantic City Kearns and company are little perturbed abgut the secrecy Carpentltr is maintaining at hi scamp. All that is worrying the two Jacks is how much they will take in at the gate of the National Stadium when sparring exhibitions start next Saturday.
As an answer to the French method of exclusive training Kearns promises to extend invitations to the ensrny o visit the Dempsey camp during training periods.
