POOD DESTRUCTION. " The dumping of. skimmed milk in Oary and East Chicago ae a preventive of lower prices is a criminal waste that should focus attention again and powerfully upon, the old question of destroying surplus agricultural products In order to sustain the prices a'rtlflcaily. - Thousands of children In the cities within easy distance of the dumping points need this milk. The fcufferings from malnutrition among those deprived of a milk ration because of the high retail prices of good milk in the cities axe well known. Not long ago The Tribune described what the South Bend Bchool nurses have found among children who are given black coffee and tea In place of the milk they should have. The profits la the milk, butter and cheese business must be wrongly adjusted If dumping is necessary to prevent financial failure of any producers. Unfortunately the anti-trust laws do not cover agricultural factors and the Lever act has been found unconstitutional. The milk dumpers probably know that they are within the law and can defy the public to grin and bear the situation or purchase the milk. South Bend Tribune.

people should know it, since finally it is the people who

furnish the money for all enterprise on a large scale. The petroleum Industry has become of such world wide Importance that it la a proper subject for greater attention by the government than has hereofore been accorded it. Whether government agencies have facilities for obtaining more reliable Information than that which is obtained by the large corporations which operate in Mexico is to be doubted, but they Vould have no incentive to publish either more or less the truth. We do not mean to insinuate that there has been deception on the part of operating companies or unofficial statisticians, but there would be advantage in having assembled In comprehensive form the facte which now come out piecemeal.

MEXICAN OIL. Reports of oil shipments from Mexico aggregating upwards of 2,000,000 barrels monthly are not

necessarily conclusive against more or less authoritative opinion that the developed petroleum areas of the southwest republic are nearlng exhaustion. On the other hand, there is no warrant, so far as has been disclosed, for assuming that because some wells have "gone to salt water" and others are expected to follow, Mexico will not continue to be an enormous producer of oil. Already explorers are meeting with success In drilling sections not heretofore tapped. It seems reasonable that in Mexico, as In the United States, it will be found that oil pools are widely distributed. At all events, It is only through drilling that the petroleum areas are to be defined, however much progress has been made In recent years In the science of geology. The companies operating in Mexico evince no disposition to desist from the search. They are going ahead, undeterred by alarming predictions put forth from a variety of sources. Still, publication by the state department of any information it has with respect to the oil fields of Mexico and Central America will be welcomed. If there Is sound basis for assertions that further profitable ventures In those directions cannot be made the

THE NATIONAL ANTHEM. Congressman Linthicum of Maryland has Introduced a bill to make "The Star Spangled Fanner" th national anthem. And the music begins a mrtley of comment pro and ct;n on the proposal. If congress can make a piece of paper a dollar with enough back of it to support the legislation why not make the well known song words and music, an anthem? Most Americans will accord to congress the moral, legal and musical right and stand up and applaud when congress has officially made Francis Scott Key's immortal words the national air and the patriotic song for the country. There will be notes of objection. It will be said that the words, however shot through with the colorful spirit of a sacred, supreme sentiment of patriotic fervor, lack the serious exaltation of great and solemn devotion as, for example, marks the words of "My Country, 'Tis of Thee." Reply will be made that there vire objections to "America" on the grounds of its striking similarity to the hymns of some other nations. There will be the "unslngability" of "The rUar Spangled Banner" brought forward as an objection to the adoption of Key's inspiring song as the

national air; but it will be rebutted that Americans "have" sung It, "are" singing it, and will continue to sing it as long as they are citizens, aspiring and nervy, of the "land of the free and heme of the brave." It will be cited that Americans are free to sing

anything they please about the "red, white and blue" and that they have the temerity to tackle any old song no matter how difficult It may be to get in all the words and syllables to match the notes. Perhaps It will be well to adopt a difficult one Just to prove to the world that Americans can do anything. And then there is the final, conclusive, unanswerable argument, In favor of "The Star Spangled Banner" its absolutely, incontrovertlbly demonstrated Americanism In the very first two words of the lines. No other people on the face of the earth would have had the originality, the nerve, the daring to begin a national song with

"Oh, say!" Let congress go ahead and legislate "The Star Spangled Banner" as the national anthem. Most of us have been rising to our feet when the band struck it up anyhow Just as we've been rising at the first bar of America! If anybody else can get In all the wcrds without tripping up his musical feet and falling down and breaking his record, we all can. It may help a lot to keep out objectionable foreigners, who find the language a puzzle even in the matter of everyday conversation, to compel them to learn and sing "The Star Spangled Banner."
