y. S. ACT ON MAY BRING STEEL PLANT
Developments relative to the recent purchase of 15 acres, with 2,700 feet of frontage on Lake Michigan, just east of the Illinois line, revealing that the purchaser Is the Jones & Laughlln Steel company of Pittsburgh, aow that this company already owns other land In the Calumet district and the inference Is that plans are being made to tulld a steel plant to produce material for western users. With the land which can be made by filling adjacent to the lake frontage thus acquired, the company eventually can command 300 acres with water and railroad connection. SITIATION IS ADVAXTAGEOIS The situation in unusually advantageous, and if this company builds It will add another to the large steel interests between Chicago and Michigan City. Already the Illinois Steel company has two large plants at South Chicago and Gary, the Steel & Tube company of America at Indiana Harbor, and the Inland Steel company at the same place. The Iroquois plant of the Steel &. Tube company with five blast furnaces and the Federal furnace plant of the By-Produce Coke corporation, with two blast furnacea, also are situated In this area. The National Tube company owns a large tract of lake frontage at Gary on which a tube plant will be built, according to plans laid out several years ago.
ERICSON GIVES REPORT ON WATER (Continued from page one.)
of creating a lake tunnel water supply district, and the joint construction of a suitable tunnel to supply such a district. The results of these improvements will be mary and pleasing to the citizens of Hammond and West Hamtmnw, In 6o much as they have btn forced to put up with poor pressure and poorer water for several years past. There Is no doubt but that the water supply of the two cities is a vital point, and too much stress cannot be laid on the feasibility and absolute necessty of immediate action, bu?ed on the recommendations above given. Here Is what we may expect from our renovated and thoroughly modern water supply system. First cf all, a temporary shut down for the purpose of construction or other reasons will not seriously interfere with the service. Then, the quality of the water will be materlilly bettered, because of the new Intake crib. Another important point Is tho fact that the Intake capacity can be Increased, and very eco-
I nomlcally, because of the plan of con. i struction of the new equipment, which i has been deigned for that purpose. The
! size o the new buildings will be guf- KSSSSSSJtSSSS
fic-ient to allow any reasonablo increase
of the pumping capacity without adding! anything to them, should an lncres. be made necessary by any extraordinary growth of the city. The transmis
sion lines will be so laid that indeflnte expansion may bo made without the altering of any of the new work which Is done at this time. Then, more space will be available for park purposes, because of the compactness of the proposed new pumping etatlon and Intake equipment. The estimated cost cf the system will be either $588,000 or $577,000, according to the type of transmission piping used. This sum will cither be raised by a bond Issue, or by placing the water supply system in the hands of a private corporation, as it ia at present. The lajt plan Is much more desirable, in so much as It will not tie up the es credit. Other improvements which will become necessary from time to time may then be made by floating a bor.i Issue. If as lEvre a um aa -oul be required for the proposed improvements were rai.ed by this method, the city would have nothing to fall back upon should an emergency arise where funds would be needed. The Erlcson report will be presented to the board of public works at their regular meeting this afternoon and a
snifily action Is expected from that body. Because of the interest which baa been displayed by these organlza-
tlutis. and because thoy are vitally Interested in Hammond's water supply.
Che Hammond Chamber of Commerce,
the Rotary Club and the Klwanis Club will be fflven an opportunity to pass on the report, and offer any amendments which they may deem necessary.
