It Is a satisfaction to the friends of Jabor that the norkingraan is rapidly disproving the rather general charge of loafing cn tho job which was prevalent im- ' tedlatcly after the war. Some experts do not hesitate . o say that labor's Indifference to its job was one of no factors which produced the present depression, i'iie same observers now freely state that labor is rnus.ig back and producing in something like the oU-time pre-war fashion. Industry and thrift are the hand-maidens of piosperity. Good times cannot endure unless men, when given the opportunity to labor, work industricusy and conscientiously, giving a full day's work for a lull day's pay. At tinies labor in spots seems to sorget this cardinal fact. It ask3 for a constantly diminishing number of hours, t'nder modern industry some of the work days were obviously too long. As a conscjv.ence of :eneral recognition, the eight-hour day came into being its benefits assessed and its establishment made almost universal. Hut here and there come demands for less than a landard day. Such movements instantly alarm the
public, icr if the eight-hour day is reduced to seven 1
end then to six. what will prevent its reduction to four t two? Invariably in those reductions the workmen
will agree to work u longer day provided he guts a higher rate of pay, but thui does bo repudiate hia argument that the slioit day is a physical neceasity for It is just as injurious to work loug hours at a high rate el compensation as at a lew. An unreaHonable reduction in hours of labor results in economic waste and affects adversely not only the public interest, but the workmen's Interest as well. It is obvious that in the closely-knit fabric of rnoder industrialism, what affects one party affects all parties. It is impossible to separate one from the other. If the employer is unreasonable ho will suffer the consequeuce in time as surely as the employe does at once. JJeutiitsc and injuries are reciprocal and mutual. If it ev:-.' was true that the old adage "one for all and all for ono" should apply it is in tho relationship of wage payer and wago worker. Tho workman or employer who disregards this axiom is stupidly shortsighted. Public sympathy iu tho past has been more times than not on the side of labor, but that sympathy has its limits, too, and does not hesitate to act If labor goes to extremes.

A DEMOCRATIC QUEEN SInco the Hohenzollerns and tho Hapsburgs were depeseti, there are few despotic monarehs left In the .vorld. Hut it comes its a revelation that popular rule has been so well established in countries still governed by royalty that members of the king's family go to the polls and vote Just like other subjects, and that their votes count for no more than other citizens' in determining the result in the election. At least such a situation prevails In Belgium. Queen T.Hzabeth. says a cable dispatch, cast her first vote there the other day in the communal c'.eclug her turn with the poorly dressed citizens of I".rus.els and refusing to accept a better place In tho line which was offered her. Wc sometimes wonder why the democratic and progressive people of western Europe retain the mouarchial form of government. With royalty brought to yielding self-determination to its subjects, and claimir.g no greater voice in an election than the humbler citizen, it is not so hard to understand. As a time-honored institution royalty is Hkely to be tolerated in these countries so long as the monarehs do cot come into conflict with the will of the people. If they should attempt, however, to arrogate to them.clves any of heir ancient powers their tenure of office probably would be abrupty terminated.
Discouragement was offered to further attempts on the bank of the Illinois cashier who killed one robber, wounded two and captured two others.

Week
Every application of Pepiodent brings fiv distinct result. And modern authorities conaider all of them essential. Now a world method In many countries Pepsodent Is fast displacing old teeth cleaning methods. Dental authorities the world over endorse it. Careful people must adopt it sooner or later, for old methods are not right With them, tooth troubles and discolorments have become almost universal. A change must come, and now is the time to start it.
This is to offer you a way to whiter teeth, cleaner, safer teeth. Such glistening teeth as millions now enjoy. Your dealer will give you the means. Get it and watch the effects. See your teeth grow prettier note hew clean they feel. Dentists everywhere advise this method. Millions of homes have adopted it. Try it this week, for your own sake. Learn what it means to you. To remove the film Your teeth are coated with a dingy fJm. It is viscous you can feel it with your tongue. It clings to teeth, enters crevices and stays. It clouds the teeth and causes most tooth troubles. The ordinary tooth paste does not effectively combat it, so the tooth brush has left much of it intact. As a result, teeth lose their luster. And, despite all brushing, tooth troubles have been constantly increasing. The film is what discolors, not the teeth. Film is the basis of tartar. It holds food eubstance which ferments and forms acid. It holds the acid in contact with the teeth to cause decay. Germs breed by millions in it. They, with
tartar, are the chief cause of pyorrhea. Many other serious troubles are also traced to them. Science combats it Dental science has long sought ways to combat that film. The ways have now been found. Able authorities have amply proved them. Leading dentists everywhere advise their daily use. The methods sre embodied in a new-day tooth paste Pepsodent. It combats the film wherever it may linger. In this way it brings surprising results which one quickly sees. Over 5,000 new people daily are trying out this modern method. Fights acids too Pepsodent brings three other effects which authorities now desire. It multiplies the salivary flow - Nature's great tooth-protecting agent. It multiplies the starch digestant in the saliva. That is there to digest starch deposits which may otherwise form acid. It multiplies the alkalinity of the saliva. That is Nature's neutralizer for the acids which cause decay. Pepsin is also included.
