L0. THE RICH INDIAN.
I i'..rh.n, it will HKtrnish snme ner&ous to learn that
the American Indian as a rule is not a citizen of the United States. It is true that the Indians have really the boft claim for being among the "first families" in she counry. And new he houie Indian affairs commu
te plans to report to congress a bill which would con- j fer eituenship upon most of the Redskins. Citizenship would enable the Indiana to u?c ine j riches which they own, but cannot now employ at their j will. The value of their property is computed at. $1,- j mjO.OOO.OOO. They are charges of the. government, j and as such their financial interests are carefully j guarded .by L'ncle Sam. Now- it is proposed to pas on j ibeni the self-determination principle which seems bo j generally to have, been ignored in other land. ! The Indians are far from having been cttermin- j ,ned in America. Ther? are now 33.. 162 of thc-m in ! the country, cf which 164. TS?, are full bloods arM j 46.1 70 more than half blood. Some 100.000 speak j Engii.-h and nearly 200,000 wear white men's clothes, j Already TO.000 Indians are citizens, and -'C.SI are) voters. The Indians in 1919 had total incomes of i J33,994.Sf3, which certainly indicates that IO. the
poor Indian, has become 1.0, the rich Indian. Ana certainly Lo, of all tb races that mingle in cur land, deserves the wealth if an one doe For once it all belonged to him

Change in method of calling from Hammond to Chicago. To quicken the service between Hammond and Chicago, we have arranged a new method of handling calls. Under the new plan the connections will be eslablished BY THE LOCAL OPERATOR IN THE HAMMOND EXCHANGE, and calls, therefore, will not go to the long distance operator. This change will be effective: SATURDAY, APRIL 23rd, 1921 After this date when you call Chicago, give the number to the LOCAL OPERATOR as you would do for a local call, then remain with the receiver to the ear until the connection is established. Please do not ask for long distance when you call Chicago after SATURDAY. APRIL 23, 1921 .
