On August 2, 1 920, the Telepl ione Company petitioned the Public Service Commission of Indiana for an increase in rates for telephone service in Hammond. This was to obtain the necessary revenue to pay operating expenses and Drovide net earnings sufficient to attract the large amount of new capital which must be obtained to pay for additions to the property required to meet the demands of this community for additional service. The Commission rendered its final order March 29, 1921, authorizing an increase in certain rates, but reducing substantially the rates asked for by the Company. The new rates authorized by the Commission became effective April 1, 1921, and while it is estimated that the revenue which will be derived from these rates will produce less than a fair return on the reasonable value of the property devoted to the service of the public, the Company will give them a fair trial, and do its best to make them suffice.
