THE TT VIF,i? Seed Improvement
f(0 Pf- MpiiMiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiM
fKattonal Crop ImproTmnt Serrlea.J SOME YEARS go the gram exchange wens aroused to a realization that when a farmer had marketed hia good teed gram at the elerator, it became mixed with all kinds of ih.r grains and varieties of the same grain and thu loat It. identity; that even the large dealer, in seeds knew little or nothing about the origin of each lot and in consequence varieties became hopelesaly mixed. Now a farmer is entitled to know all about the seed which he is going to plant and crop improvement associations hare been formed in a number of tatea for the sole purpose of breeding seeds which may be relied upon to be true to name and type. The Minnesota Crop Improvement Association was formed some years ago and C. P. Bull, the plant breeder at the University of Minnesota, realizing that research was not enough, took an active part in the dissemination of seed grains to reliable farmers who became members of the Association. Prof. T. E. Odland is now the Secretary of this Association and a pure bred seed show has just been held at St. Paul, emphasizing the value of this cooperation and demonstrating that scien tifie seed breeding can suoceed in years when the average crop may be almost a failure. "I believe," says A. W. Malcomson,
Co. Agt., Lyon Co., Minn., "that most men who raise clovers, and more especially alfalfa, will find a ready sale for all the seed they can produce if they will keep it pure and make their supply known." "Farmers who have lands free from noxious weeds ought to make seed breeding a business in connection with the State Breeding Association so that carloads of pure bred seed may be had at any point, which may be relied upon to preserve its identity, without which information every farmer is working in the dark," says Frank Baackes, Vice President American Steel 4 Wire Co. "The experiment stations are always protecting the farmer against worthless varieties by originating improved varieties of grain by crossing the best selections. They test the varieties out twfore they are distributed very widely and then in order to maintain the integrity of the seeds, the members of the Crop Improvement Association are served first. 'The CYop Improvement Association are growing rapidly and find a ready market for all of the identified seeds recommended by the judges at the state shows." Seed houses scattered all over the country have, of course, been a blessing, yet it would be far better if every locality could have pure bred seeds home grown.
