A business man gtvca his bank a four months' note, iipr knowing whether it will not cor-e due on Sunday or on bo me clay of the week on which he has an engagement at a distant point.

An employer hires an employee at a certain sum per month. The employee. ouM-s F.t the end of one week. The amount due the employee is often open to much dispute, because a week 5s rot an integral part of a month. M.llions of us work by the month una yet w bate no such thing as a standard month We have standard-iL-'J everything else excer our standard of time the? very thing we u:e the most. Th- need for an improvement la the calendar has long been recognized, and in receru years reveral plans for an improvement have been proposed. Only two of these plans hate received yerion consideration. These are the "Swln" plnn and the "American" or Liberty Calendar plan. THF. SWISS jTLAJ The Swiss plan was proposed first. It originated in Switzerland and was for a tim so well thought of tbat It was approved by several of the leading Chambers of Commerce of Eu

rope. In fact, a bill for the adoption of thla plan was introduced 'in the British Parliament just before the war. This plan sets aide one independent day in every year, which is not lnclt:d:fj in any week cr month, and divides the remaining 364 days so

that there are thirty days in each of tiie, first two month of every quarter and thJrty-one days in the lost. The advantages of this plan lie in the fact that the first month of every e;uarler would alweys commerce on tiie same day of the week, the secon'l month of every quarter would always commence on a certain other day of the week; and the third month cf every quarter would always commence on another certain day of the wee!:. Cnscq-jently, under this plan, ano co.ilu figure out the location in the wfi of any future date, end he could do so without the use of a printed calendar. It is acknowledged that this plan wottH be a great Improvement over our present atrocious form, b'Jt its utmost fatal reeaknecs lies in the feet that the weeks h not fit the months end the months are sth'l of two different lengths. These two serious eie-fe-ts are entirely overcome in the "American" or Liberty Calendar plan. MBEKTT CAJLKXDAK PlxAX The Liberty Calendar plan sets aside New Tear Day as an irtdepetrtent legal holiday. It stands between the last day of December and the first day of January arvl Is not included in any week or month. Another independent day, called "Leap Year Day." is provided for leap years. It is placed between June and July end in not included in any week cr month. The. remaining .16 4 days are divided into thirteen months of exactly four weeks er.ch. Thus the weeks are made to exactly fit the months and the months are all of the same length. Fvery month commences with Monday end there are exactly 24 work days in every month. In order to retain exactly oneseventh of the tlm for Sundays, each seventh New Tear Day becomes "New Year svunday," and each seventh Leap Year Day becomes "Leap Year Sunday " The adfied month is named 'Liberty," and it is placed next after February. Thus the months are January,

February, Liberty. March, etc. Four ,

months are placet! in th" s-immer season and three in each of the others. Ltoertv is tcry fittingly the first month of spring. The selection of this name for tne additional month had much to do with naming the new c:3lenaar. and yet the name "Liberty Calendar" is ?!so especially appro

priate because it was chosen in No

vember, 1918. right after the armia-J

tic was signed It is claimed by experts that the advantages of this form cannot be overri.timE.ted The saving of time and mental effort would be immense. Fvery day of the month would alwa;s fall on a cert-iin day of the wr.k. In every month the 1st., Sth, if.th and 2"n'l would always be Mcr.dav: the 2nd, 9th. IS'h and 23rd would always bo Tuesday, the 3rd, 10th. 17th and 2 4th always Wednesday the 4th. 11th. ISth and 25th always Thtrsday; the 6th. 12th, 19th and 26th always Friday, the 6th, 13th, 20th and ?7th always Saturday: and he 7th, 14th. 2Ut and 2Sth always Sunday. One would r.lways know the dnv of the month as easily as he now knows the day of the week and printed calendars would soon be unkneiwtl Good Friday and Easter Sunday are set. for the 12th and 14th of March in every year, which correpond with our present 7th and 9th days of April. Under this calendar, every holiday and every anniversary wouid always fall on some certain rlay of the week. The Fourth rf July. Armistice Dav and Christmas would always fall on Thursday. A promissory note given for any number of weeks, months and years would always come due on the fame day of th week it was given. TFHU HA ST I, Y DIVIDED 12VTO QCJKTtnS The year can be more ea-i!y divided into qdarters nder this Liberty Calendar than undejr the present form. Under this new form, each quarter will contain exactly thirteen weeks and each quarter will always commence with Monday. Under our pres

ent form the quarters are of three

different lengths and commence on

different days of the week. Moreover.

the new and real quarters will ne rar better for large business concerns Every quarter will start with Monday, but as a rule the quarters will not start on the first day of the month, and this will relieve congestion of ome work. While the new number of months, 13. is not easily divisible, the number of work days in a month. 24. the weeks in a month. 4. and the weeks In a. vear. n2. are all easily divisible.

This "(s Imnortant. as fully 93 Ppr

cent of all settlements involving time, are by the hour, day, week, or month, and not bv the year. The objection to the number thirteen Is foolish ruperstition. The United States Hac contains thirteen

stripes, but this fact does not detract from the respect given It, nor interfere with Its success. While the new calendar has thirteen months. It never has any "Friday the 12th." This plan of calendar provides, as doss our present form, tha.t only such

century years as can be divided by 461 shall be leap year. This is ncc-.ii-aryi because the mean calendar year i thirty-four seconds lonser than tha solar year. Twenty days are added to the accepted rummer sea-son ten days be

fore and ten days after the summer

solstice. The other seasons are short

ened a trifle This liberty calendar would provs very convenient for both employers

and employees. All pay daya, whether

weekly, semi-monthly, monthly or

quarterly, woubl always come at th end of the week. All notes and con

tracts would be so drawn that r.one would ever mature on .Suntiay. All semi-annual payments woubl come deie on Monday. January 1st. and on, Monday, June 16th. $150,000,000 SATED AXXTALLT The adoption of this new tlcr.iar would caure & earing of 49.0C0.OiiO

a .tear in cost of printed and litho

graphed calendars, whue Fie oorr.oined saving of time and money would etjual fully J150.000,00 a, year. A bill which provides for the adop Hon of this new form has elreadr, been introduced in the United 8ratea Congress and a bill will probably a!s be introduced In the British ParliamentAs soon as the United State joins the League, or an association of nations, a Joint Resolution will ba Introduced in both Houses, reqt- ;sting the League of Nations to enU zr. international convention at Warming ton, D. C to consider the whole tub ject of calendar reform. A corporation known as The Li ".' efty Calendar Association of America' was organized in the fall of 191S to' work for the adoption of this n-wr form. The officers of this association claim this new calendar is absolutely the most scientific, the most convenient, and beyond question the be?t form of calendar that can possibly b devised. They claim It could b adopted to take effect and with' scarcely any friction or lnconvenienc whatever, on the first of any year, commencing with Sunday or Monday.; Tbev also claim that if this pl3n prevails it will be used for ail time to come and that the change will prove. one of the greatest economic reforms in all history. LTDEKTY CALENDAR CATECHISM Among the pamphlets published by. the Libertv Calendar Association is a,, leaflet entitled "The Liberty Calendar Catechism." which reads as followsF How many seconds make a minute?. Answer, sixty. How many minutes' make an hour? Sixty. How many hours mako a day? Twenty-four.

How many days majte a .i Seven How many weeks make & month? NOBODY KNOWS. It is pr-epo.sed that a Liberty Calendar Association shall be organized lit every country, and that these associations shall work together In th prosecution of this Important reform. Thoe who wish for further in-formati-an are invited to write to th Liberty Calendar Association or America. Minneapolis, Minnesota, U. S. A.
