by a acors of 22-8. It was a heartbreaking flnsh for the Kmeraons who until the final game with the oil makers were given first place In the northern Indiana t.itle chase. The Oil City ran well be proud of their basket tossers. They opened the tournament Friday with a 19-12 victory te their credit practically eliminatingLowell who was picked a3 a dark horse for .he title. They wera again compelled to muss up their lilly whites Saturday afternoon and walloped Fair Oaks to the tune of 63-9. Refreshed fro ma short rest they cam back In the evening they came out victorious over Emerson. Hart's nw scheme of defense turned the tide in favor of the Whitings Fulling: his defense line up under their basket and back a short distance the long: shots at which Dick Sturtridge of Emerson has made himself a reputation, were Impossible. Captain Sibley of the Emersons was also baffled ' with the defense, completing the first game of the season without a basket to his credit. The Whitings as they formed for the championship rush

There is no doubt that there will :j many ho will disagree with the writer's selections The writer has watched basketbil'. games for years and has seen the best teams in the country at play and knows a little basketball. He offers this team is the best team in the dls trict tournament at Gary. In the first place, teams who couid not survive the first round were not considered. It takes at least two

H: shot four baskets himself, follow ;0 thi; ball .o closely that it could not got away from Mm. His playing in thi slast game clearly showed h'.;s superiority over Sibley the Kmeraon crack. Hurke, who was guarded the entire game by "Woods, succeeded in eluding this guard enough times to pass all around nim and counted twice on his own account. No amount of rough stuff ruffled him. YY"e nvjst place him ahead of Sibley also. Larch of Rensselaer was good and together with Harmon cime very near beating Ernerson in their game. There were some other men in the tournament. It lb hard to leave such men as Quinlan of Emerson and I'jlk of Froebel off th- team. Polk did not play the game he is capable of. The Brook team although playing in the semi-finals did nut have a man capable of getting into these teams. Vandervoort showed up best, but he doe

Whiting played only six baskets n-i-r: scored against them, three by I.owe'.l. one by Fair Oaks and two by Emerson, one realizes that there was some piayer in Whiting's defense. He jsi able to do this with but one personal foul callpd on him in the three games. For the floor guard we place his teammate, Thcsin. This boy was aggressive and was responsible for many of the points m ihe games. He passed beautifully and -sized up plays quickly, His dribbling and basket shooting was very good. On the second tea..i we place Piazza as running guard. This boy was active throughout the gamea and it wa largely through his showing that Froebel was able 10 hold Brook as close as they did. Woods of Emerson is also picked for the second team. This boy is big a;i 1 aggressive and played good basketball. Olson of Froebel Is deserving of much credit. We place Sturtridge of Emerson for

NEW YORK, March 7. Tin looklnr for a bang-up pennant race and expect to see the Cubs In the thick of It from the start" This snappy pedictlon regarding the coming National league scramble was received today from Johnny Evers, who Is In sunny Pasadena with his "Bruins." Evers doesn't mince worOs nor make predictions unless he feels sure of his ground. So It Is evident that he has a lot of confidence In his club. "It's altogether too early to venture an expectation ss to where the Cubs will finish," he continued, "but you can rest assured that the opposition will note us 'in the league. "Incidentally I'm expecting plenty of opposition. The Brooklyn, New York, Pittsburgh and St. Louis will all have strong clubs in the field as will Pat Moran at Cincinnati. I also expect to see tho Boston Braves look up under Fred Mitchell. The race Isn't going to be a Joy ride for my team. "New faces anl changes In our lineup will put new V.'e into the Cubs and we will start the season in grej.t shape if present indications count. Catalina Island, where we spent tho first days of our training period, is the most wonderful spot In the country for a ball c-ub to work and In Pasadena the weather could scarcely be Improved upon. "One long practice session dally has proven very satisfactory so far. The players get more out of It and avoid the bother of donning uniforms twice a day. "With the pitcners coming along 8no but little In the way of sore muscles in camp I am certain they are contended with the way things are going. "It Is good to be with the Cubs again getting, ready to fight for a league pennant. It brings back memories of the good old days when I had Tinker and Chance on either side of me and I'll never be satisfied until I have led the Cubs to a championship."
