" It did. seem an unusual statement on the face of it. But that man was right. He had thought a little below the surface had dug down into the real facts. He explained it in this way. Must Buy to Sell "I've got something- to sell just like a manufacturer or dealer. I am a wage-earner, and I must sell my time, experience and ability. Someone must buy it John Jones, the shoe manufacturer, for example. "Now, suppose, I quit buying shoes and you quit and thousands of others! John Jones is forced to quit making shoes- and how can he then buy anything from me? 3 distributor, retailer and buyerand we have a specific condition, affecting each and every one of us, for good or for ill, as our buying activity or inactivity will have determined. We Did It Whatever the condition of business may be today, we, the Public, have made it exactly what it is. And, we the Public, can make tomorrow's business whatever we want it to be. As a class, the manufacturer cannot do it nor the distributor or the retailer. You and can do it by buying. We have the power-the buying power. And it takes this power to turn the wheels of business and prosperity. Four Factors When business is good we are all prosperous because we are all buying and selling back and forth. Business means buying and buying moves in a circle. There are four factors in the Circle of Buying the maker, the jobber, the retailer and you the buyer. Together, these four factors constitute the Public and spring from it. i

5 The manufacturer, distributor or retailer is in a separate class only so far as his own business is concerned. In every other relation of life, he is one of the great Public, affected by the same living conditions that affect you. Outside his own business, he is you a buyer He joins with you, therefore, in starting the buying impulse that sweeps around the circle. He, like you, buys the necessities and comforts of life from a retailer who buys from a jobber who buys from a manufacturer all of whom must buy from you (the Public) the time, skill, knowledge and materials, that the Public has to sell. Then business is good. And we all have our share of the benefits. Business completes the circle and the public shares in the benefits of the buying power it has put in motion. It gets back in wages, salaries, etc., the money it has spent, and thus gets the money to keep on buying. But when the public doesn 't buy The entire system stops. The retailer, jobber and manufacturer cannot buy, either. And everybody loses the public, most of all since the market for its labor, service and materials is curtailed by its own action. 1 1(01

Me Lives
If conditions today are not what you would have them, it is a simple matter to change them for the better. A resumption of buying starting at the very foundation the public each and every one of us will bring good business and prosperity to us all just as surely as a tree must cast a shadow in the sun. And there is no other wav. The Answer If each of us should today begin buying wisely and prudently the things we need and want business would be better tomorrow. And each of us would benefit. Prices are more reasonable, Some have been high too high perhaps growing out of unprecedented times and conditions. But those days are past. Manufacturing - costs have now reached a lower level. Manufacturer, jobber and retailer are taking their losses on existing stocks of merchandise and are offering fresh stocks at new and lower prices. You can buy wih confidence that these lower prices are as fair as they are attractive and with the understanding that they can be II

maintained only if buying is resumed and the entire machinery of business (clear back to the manufacturer) ia kept turning. In a Nutshell Each of us has something to sell and m ust sell it to live whether it be labor, service, materials, or a manufactured product. But in order to sell, first you must buyIf you buy from someone else someone else will buy from you. But the otfier fellow can't keep on buying if you quit. Jones, the shoe manufacturer, couldn't no one can! Buying is an expression of your faith and confidence in the country, its institutions and its business. It is likewise the one sound and constructive way to assure your own welfare and income. Must Give to Get We can have better business real prosperity if we want it easily, simply, quickly not by merely asking for it but by acting for it By buying wisely and prudently NOW!
