THE TIMES Friday, Februarv 4, 1921.
Tells of Week-day Religious Instruction Many of the members of the Hammond Chamber of Commerce learned Tor the first time today of the tremendous success -which lias crowned i fie efforts of the promoters of the rohool.i for week day religious Instruction. N. F. Korsyth, superlntendnt of the work In Hammond. Wliltinfir and Kast Chicago, explained It all at the noon day luncheon. Hammond now has 10 schools: Whitins. 2; East Chicago, 1; and Indiana Harbor. 2. Fifty-three teachers are
'luployed and 1.900 pupils have eni oiled. The religious Instruction Is r.ot compulsory and Is carried on at morning, noon or evening outside of the regular school hours. Hammond alone has 1.500 pupils and the schools have been going only six months. Gary with twice as many children of school r.gc has 3.000 pupils in the religious classes, which have been established for six years. Teachor.i of ttio city schools are paid by the Hammond Committee on Ilrllglous Kducatlon for their overtime work as instructors In tho t'asses. Instruction is strictly nonyectarlan and the children have shown increasing Interest In th work. This l shown by the fact that after running two and one-half months the classes continue to grow. The average attendance now Is S8 per cent in Hammond. Three weeks go It fell o(T becau.se of the vaccination campaign, but it Is now back to normal. The main trouble now Is that the classes have become so large as to be unwieldy. Seven or eight still have over 40 students and only a short time n;n two classes of 60 members each were rpllt up. At the teachers' conference Tuesday evening several reported thit they were expecting to report 100 pr cent attendance this month. Recently at the Riverside school 15 mothers were outspok-.-n In their praise of the work. They said it was having a marked effect upon their children. One mother said that whenever verses were read from the Bible her child frequently could repeat them from memory. Another mother Maid her child would not retire at night until the lesson In religious training had been memorized. On a recent holiday at the Franklin school the teacher was anxious to have the afternoon off. She told the children that If they de;ired to come to the class at 3:30 that afternoon she would take charge as u.ual. Instead of taking advantage of the holiday as she had supposed they would, every member of the class turned out. The appeal today at the Chamber of Commerce luncheon was for aid In raising the funds to carry on the work the. balance of the school year. It Is1 estimated that $900' per month will be required of which $750 is for teachers' ra'arles and $130 for running expenses.

So far has been s-pent in carry ing on the work. The chamber gave Its approval of the work and will support Dr. 1 1. K. The Day After the Turkey Dinner If yon had a turkey for dinner and you are at a loss how to serve It th next day, try a turkey sou!fle. It is mads by mashing finely a tup ot turkey dressing and add half a cup of finely minced turkey. Sprinkle with sa't and white pepper, moisten with a little seasoned white sauca and scald in a double boiler. Stir in the well-beatea yoik of one egg with a ilttle chopped parsley. Povir into a pudding dish and bake until well raisen ted browned. Delicious sandwiches may b mad by mixing equal quantities of chopped turkey and celery. Season and add to each cuplul of tho mixture one chopped hard bailed gS. two or three chopped olives and sufficient mayonnaise, or boiled dressing to moisten. Split hot baking powder biscuit, butter lightly and fill with the turkey mixture. Renewing a Black Felt Hat It a man's or woman's black felt hat becomes shabby and faded, take a piece of soft muslin and dampen well with ammonia. Rub tha crown of the hat with this cloth, rubbing around the crown and then around the brim, on top and underneath. It will come out clean and black. When Sewing Up a Fowl after stuffing, dtp the needle Id salt and it will not slip. A Granite Plate kept on the top shelf over the coal or gas stove is very handy while cooking. the sauce or pudding may be laid on it instead of on the table or stove. It is easily and quickly washed an'J will not crack. To Polish a Waxed Floor As most wax preparations have a turpeutine base, a waxed floor may be restored by rubbing with a mop or cloth molste'ried well with turpentine. This softens the wax and renews the polish. Finish by wiping with a soft, dry cloth. To Keep Pumpkins Gather before the Irost is heavy jnd coat the stems with sealing wax. Store in a dry place, ani they will keep for about a year. It is important to gather them before the frost and to coat the stems at once. In this way you may have fresh pumpkins all Winter and need never resort to the canned variety. The Best Roach Powder The most effective roach powder discovered is commercial sodium fluoride. It may be purchased in any drug store. Shoot into all cracks where roaches run with a poA-der gun. It is poisonous, so keep it away from food, and be careful if there are any domestic pets. Its great advantage is that it will absolutely rid a room of roaches over night if applied to all cracks. It is white and odorlesa, and inexpensive. If you are afraid of a poison (although there is no danger if a little care is taken), make a paste or white soap and" ammonia and apply to cracks with an old toothbrush. Borax spread on shelves Is a goal preventive although it does not destroy them.
