Monday afternoon whe rthe Ford car in wihich tehy were riding was hit by a PeruwylvarUa train at the depot at Crown Point. There was not enougrh of the Ford left to ell the tale and how the men escaped ith their lives is a miracle. They were returning from woTk being- employed by County Road Superintendent Clarence F.der and when they reached the Root lumber yard they saw 1h 3:51 train comingdown th track. The trai-n had owed down cmiewhit and they t vjught tihcy had ample time to cross, but ther Tui.-C3.1culted the distance a.r.d the car was struck. Both men landed on the pilot of the engine and McCarty was under it when the train was stopped. Goff had -a. couple of ribs broken and McCarty' s back was injured but outside of that and the s'hock the men wre rot hurt. Kye w Itn ws to tho accident expected to tee the tnen picked up dead. They were taken to their homes and given medical attention and are resting easily.

Arrested Fourth Time For Wife Beating After hitting his wife over the head with a water pipe, a half an inch thick and about five foot long, 'Wesley Dixon. 607 "West 43rd street, was arrested at midnight yesterday on a complaint registered by Mrs. Dixon. He wan booked on a charge of wife beating. According to Mrs. Dixon this is the fourth time Fhe hes caused hia arrest on the same charge.

CONSTRUCTION OF $12,00 STORE IS BEGUN A $12,000 store building to be located at 1068 Washington street, was started yesterday by Louis Takottf. The plans were laid out by Walter Hudson and the contract for the mason work was Slven to Tony Tappas. The store will be located on the first floor and the second floor will be made for living apartments. The permit for the erection of the building was granted yesterday by Commissioner Walter Dougan. A permit was issued to Joseph J. Meyer for the erection of a building 25 by 68 in dimensions to bo located at 1443 Adams street. Construction has been started and the cost is estimated at $3,500.

The consideration is reportel to have been in the neighborhood of J163.000, and was sold by a syndicate ot men known as -the Calumet Hotel company. Tl;e hotel was erected several years ago by a number of Russian Worn Gary men and is one of the largo;t buildings sluth if the Wabash tracks. It has some SO guest roims besides the office and other public rooms.

PASSES FRAUDULENT CHECK ARRESTED On a criminal court warrant issued t"' the sheriffs office at Crown Point M. C. Streeter, 184 Massachusetts .-irett, was arrested. In Gary yesterday on a charge of issuing a fraudulent check. The details of the case waa not disclosed.

GARY MAN IN BANKRUPTCY Petition In bankruptcy was filed today in the federal court at Hammond by Teter Rosea, who lives at 1213 Adams street. Gary. Rosea had been running a grocery at 2117 Broadway. His Bchedule lists his debts at $3,501.84 and Ills -assets at J3.2il.32 of which he claims exemption for $600. liosca is being represented by Attorney E. I. Brandenburg of Hammond.

DISCUSS PUTTING NEW TICKET IN FIELD At a meeting of a number of prominent citizens of East Chicago last night the proposition of putting a citizens ticket in the field at the coming election was discussed. Representatives of different political parties were present and when the vote was taken the majority favored the independent ticket. There has -been considerable talk regarding possible candidates, but as yet no announcements of candidacy have been made.

DR. J. E. MET CALF TO LEAVE GARY Dr. J. n. Metcalf one of Gary's pioneer residents and one of the county's prominent physicians, . left Gary on Sunday for Denver, Colo., where he will make his future home. There he will devote his time in the development of the Gary Shale OH and Refining company's interests. Mrs. Metcalf, who remained behind to rispoae of some of the house hold goods, will Join Mr. Metcalf shortly. Dr. Metcalf has some private property interests In the region of Denver, to which he will also give his attention. Mrs. Metcalf remains behind to dispose of the house hold goods and prepare to move out west fcr good. Stephen, who ia in school at Valparaiso, will Join his father and dither as slon as school is over.

CLYNE AFTER FIGOT PICTURES CHICAGO. Jan. 15. United States District Attorney Charles F. Clyne todry placed himself in line for a bout with Jack Dempsey, heavy weight champion of the pugilistic world. Dempsey, according to Information rce'ved by Clyne, intends testing mall regulations prohibiting transportation of prize fight films by mailing through Chicago films of the Dempsey-Brcn-i-.an New York affair. "Just to soon as I hear of such teflon," declared Prosecutor Clyne, "I will demand a warrant for Dempsey's arrest. The law is very clear and Dempsey will find himself with a fight on his hands."
