JUDICIAL SALARIES. Anions the salary bills Introduced In tba legislature is one to raise the salaries of circuit and superior Judges to 15.000 a year ar.d in its advocacy of tb.it? measure the IndlanapoMa Star has the following to say: Tfca inequality of tbe judicial salaries paia !a Marion county may be seen from the fact that judges in similar courts In Cincinnati get $9,00!) a year. Those in Dayton pet 100. ia Cleveland $S.500, in Detroit $8,501, in Chicago 512.000. in New York $1 0,000 to $17,500. Lawyers in Indianapolis make, just ss much as those in Cincinnati, Dayton, Cleveland and other cities of thd middle west. If tbe judiciary is to get a square deal and is to continue to attract the quality of men who should be on the bench in this city and state thie ealary should be higher. High-grade attorneys, from time Immemorial, have sacrificed income from private practice for tbe dignity and honor of judgeships. A judicial petition is generally looked upon us tbe crowning achievement of a legal career. Able judges should not be required to take so large a proportion f their pay in dignity and honor, has been the case in Indiana in recent years. There ia considerable Found sense in that atatenrent end even many of those who frown darkly on the salary bcost proposition will subscribe to it. We are asking a great deal when we ask a man to accept from the public for the sake of the dignity end honor attaching to the public office, an income about half as large as that he can make in private practice. Yet have done this thin? for many years and happily tare found good men who will stand for it. Yet It is to be feared that with the altered and tiepreciated value of the dcllar, together with tbe added financial attractiveness which private practice holds for desirable lawyers, the time is fast approachtug, if not already here, when the people vil! have to accept eecond and third raters to fill judicial positions. It fs a eorry commentary on condition" when it can be said that a judge of our courts ia paid less than a coal miner, yet that very thing can be said truthfully today, says the Fort Wayne Newa. The present salary provided for judges has not half the purchasing power at present that it had when it was fixed by law and by that token it. is only fifty ped cent of the salary it is supposed to be. The average lawyer will sacrifice considerable for the snke of the honor pertaining to the judiciary, buf it is hardly fair to ask him to sacrific everything and go about in ragged clothes with a hungry look. The self-respect of cur people Fhouid demand n remuneration for those it honors with high place . orM-i- :; 'm iko with the dignify of those position?.

OT ctxarae. whim we -were children, we used to be tld that the word aebxa vas invented just so the letter 7. conlfl be included in our alphabet. And many j

words seem not to have much more significance than that, but there are whole regiments of words, right

Iron this page, in this column or in any reading matter

that cornea before your eye, that have a history, a tradition or a custom hidden behind them. Hobnob with words. They Till become very

friendly after a while. Let's take that word hobnob, for Instance. Here's Its history: In the epacious days of Queen Klizabeth, when all hou6e were built with fireplaces, there was at the corner of the hearth a small elevated object called tho hob, aid behind it a seat. In winter the beer waa placed on the hob to warm. If you wanted cold beer you got it frcm the nob, or small table ttanilitis nearby. Tbue you might have your choice, hob or nob, warm or cold.

From this grew the custom, on asking one's companion to partake of beterages now forbidden, to say: "Will you hob or nob with me?" In ether words, do you prefer warm beer or cold, white wine or red? And to convivial spirits, who so often asked the question, came to be known as hobrobbers, and if you cultivated a man's acquaintance, you were said to hobnob with him. What a lot behind such a little word' Teke a word occasionally and dig into it. It is i! goodly game, and you'll lose nothing by the knowledge you acquire.

BEHIND DIVORCE STATISTICS. Perhaps no one was aumzed .wbeu I'rof. Rudolph II. Hinder of Columbia University announced the other day thut onl one farmer in i'2 is divorced. Nor wus much surprise occasioned when he addod that one traveling salesman, in uine has a legal separation from his wife. For tbe man who sticks home most is the tiller of the aoll. And the unfortunate most surely doomed to t,ce his family only occasional!- is the "drummer." If e man knows his family well, the figures seem to say, he will stick by it, and his wife and children will surely cling to him. Uut if their acquaintance is the passing matter of a week-end one out of nine will prove unequal to the strain. There is a little sermon la every sentence of the professor's report. But perhaps the most significant one Is this: "Childless couples arc divorced more frequently than those having children." Children make happy homes. Life is far better witb than without them.

The average .American wants quick action, and the telephone gives it to him. Today America is the largest user of the telephone of all the nations of the earth. It is less than forty-five years since Professor Bell brought out his speaking telephone, and today "there are 12,000,000 telephones in the United States belonging to or connected with the Bell System. Of the myriad of telephone conversations which pass over the world's wires, more than half are from telephone to telephone witnin the United States. America's wonderful telephone development is due to superior equipment and methods and to the big idea that the public is best served by an Universal System in which each Bell Telephone is the center of a talking circle, limited only by the distance to which speech can be transmitted.
