SPECIAL TO TWETil-S WKTTINO, Ind.. Jan. 7. Whitinj, H'jrh powerful combination swamped fhe string downstair ArjM H. S. five last night on the local tl -nr by a to 7 count. The Argoa team wag bewildered by the fast passing game of the iocala. llofklns. Stnwell, and Car'--'r'hieasen sinking field goals at will. The Whiting defense was superb last 'litiht and Arjjos only scored two field S'-als the whole, game. Nejdl played a ft guarding gatie for the green mid white. Mely. the lanky center of the visitors w as their luml nary., llatiinond and Clary had scouts at the time, which made the locals keep -me new formation undtr cover. The .rliminary same was a thriller, the Whiting seconds winning from the l'ranrbei night school team of Gary by IS o 14 count. Wirkhorst played a -ond-rf ul game for Whiting. Anton ;s Cory's best. In every sport'ng center 'n Whiting and at various places in East lihlcago, Hammond. Oary and South Chicago one can, hear the praises of the fans. All In all we ought to see i-ome real good fights. T.ast evening we invaded "Funchie" McClelland's training quarters at the outh Side Pinochle Club and uw him tep out and work for several boers. We were impressed with bis stamina and we feel pretty safe in makinj the statement that no matter how good Jimmie Quinn is "Punchie" will be there at the finish. One can nerer tell what is going to happen n a contest uf this kind, but "Punchie" has always taken good care of himself, and has trained religiously for this bout. He is faster than ever and his wallop is in good working order. He will make 130 pounds which will be several pounds more than Jimmie Quinn whose Liest weight is 12. Just a few years ago McClelland waa one of the leading amateur featerweights In the country. He has not been following the fight tame recently, but has trained conliru'atisly nevertheless. Jfmmie Quinn. who like Bishep. is r. nder the management of Jack O'Keefe of Irondale, has a large following who iielieve that he can take the best that tjCe!land can offer. He baa fought three fights within the past five weeks w inning them a'l, one via the knockout route. He can hit. Is clever, fast, and has had the best of handling. We .ie lookin this bout to rival the main event, the ten round bout between Bishop and Berger. The two preliminaries are wortuy of consideration. Toung McGrath of Gary will have a foeman worthy of Uis steel In Dick Clabby of Hammond. This McGrath boy has created quite a stir in the steel city and the fans who have watched him work out feel that all he neds la a little more experi ence before he can be considered among the top notchers. He is said to , be extremely fast and has unlimited ! onduranee. Dick Clabby has many I admirers who see In him a smaller j edition of his brother J'mmy. The winner of this fight has l een premised a match with Ollle O'Neil, the sensational 120 pounder of Chicago. This will be enough to spur both fighters on to the limit. Kddie Perry of the North Kide is bringing a host of admirers when he

U. championship several years ago both as a welter and a middleweight. This establishes his class. These boys will weigh In at 142. The success of this venture is already assured. More than half the tickets have been sold. South Chicago fans are coining en maife because they are interested in many of the fighters. Gary will send a great many because of their desire to see Battling McGrath perform. The Slovak Home in whiting will be tha scene of some great battles. WILCE REGRETS BADGER ATTACK rXDIAXAPOUS. Jan. 8, Regret that a controversy should arise be- ' tween members of the western confer- j ence was expressed here yesterday by j Coach John Wilce of the Ohio State ' University football team after reading the statement of Coach John R. T.lchards of Wisconsin intimating that he would resign if Ohio State is again placed on the Wisconsin schedule. "I am sorry to think that such a thing as this had to conl up in the Big Ten conference from a conference coach." said Wilce. "not only because It Is an attempted slam at Ohio State University, but also because it tends to throw a bad light on a great organization nnd misinform the general public in regard to the high, clean 6pirit of sportsmanship that exists among the universities, athletic directors, coaches and players in the western conference and In western collegiate football." Statements attributed to Richards that visiting coaches and players received poor treatment at Ohio State were branded by Wilce as "utterly impossible and absurd." Wilce. with other Ohio State representatives, stopped here on the return trip from the California game at Pasadena to attend a banquet of the Indiana-Ohio State Association.
