IT. S. TREASURER WILL RETIRE WASHINGTON. Jan. 4. 'When John Rurke, V. S. treasurer, has counted ill the money in Uncle Sam's coffers, he will retire from public life, he in ccunced today. Burke announced that hi resignaiion has been filed with the secretary of the treasury and he has asked to be relieved of his duties at the earliest oupfiblo moment. Under the law a retiring United States treasurer and his successor must make a count of the moneys in the public treasury before a change in office. This work will take about one week, Burke estimates. Treasurer Burke will Join the private banking and brokerage firm of Cardoe & Co., in New Tork, and the future firm name will be Vardoe & Unrke.
DRY FORCES CLAIM VICTORY CHICAFO, Jan. i. Prohibition forces claimed an important victory here today in the decision of th'e V. S. court of appeals that "dry" raiders have the power to seize contraband liquor without a warrant and that liquor eo seised may be introduced as evidence In court. The ruling was made In the case of Frank Sabutia, an East St. Louis saloon-keeper, who sought to tesit the constitutionality of the war-time prohibition act. Counsel for Sabutis contended that such seiaure of liquor was in contravention of the fourth and fifth articles of the constitution of the United States.
