CHEISTMAS IS HERE. Amid the boisterous joys that trail along with Santa Claus, the gifts, the sweets, the many glad surprises and the delightful laughter of the children. It Is

good to know that all this festivity has not been idle, j

There has been a kindly meaning in It all.

Not many mothers and fathers are there who have j

not reminded their increasiugly hilarious flock time and again that" it is more blessed to give than to receive. It Is not the crow of gladness with which the youngster seizes his much-to-be-prized toy that reveals bim to his parents. And those anxious ones are alwmys on the alert to see what kind of man or woman In their home. Rather It Is the little, modest, sidelong glance that stole to sister's face, the wistful eyes that timidly sought Daddy's for a second, while the recipient of the childish sift tore open the tissuo and tinsel and disclosed the Irving presen that lay there. The thrill tbat cam to sister or to father at that

moment did not compare to the tingllnp glow

be worth more than 33 'cents in terms of pre-war currency. Its 1920 value. There will not be a panic, economists say. A dollar will buy more than formerly. That always benefits the consumer, and hits the producer. But In the long run It will not mean a drastic change in values. The financial ship rocked too far to one side In 12. A KANSAS PRECEDENT, fn a Kansas town the recently elected candidates ranging from state senator to assessor, having In the a.rn;a.lgn told th voters what they expected to do If rlectod, turned about right after eltrrtlon and at a public meeting told "what we expect of thu public during oar term of office." It Is a valuable precedent and rhould spread. Telling the public what to do .should lot, however, be confined to the elected officials. They might not tell all that the public should lo. 0?tU n on the part of the public to act In it.s own beh.-rif should ba received.

CROPS, GOODS AND MONEY. Certainly there is no causo for levity lu the estimate of the department of agriculture that this year's crops are worth five billions of dollar. less than last jear's. Hut If we will lock beyond the dollar mark perhaps we hall s;e that It is no cause for profouad discouragement, either. The crop was larger than the 1913 crop, except, of course, in wheat. Hut altogether there were more tons and bushels of the fruit tf the soil produced. The trouble Is, the crop now sells for less. Hut so does everything el.se. Manufactured goods re undergoing a tremendous decline, perhaps another live billions. There are still gi ods enough for our consumption and our foreign trade. There Is also enough of foodstuffs. There has been a fall of 10 billions in dollar mark., which no one r.an either eat or wear. The country has been only apparently impoverished, not actually. The capital Invested in farming and the other business of the country has .sufTcre.1, of course. That mans :u.t this; that there are fewer dollar marks gained, not. less weaith. They hae to go to t-d at o'clock every night for a month. They have to go right up to the. minister and beg his pardon. And -worst of all they are not to receive a fcingU) Christmas present.
