SANTA CBAUS North Pole, December 23. 1920. Mr. Daniel Brown. Mayor, Hammond, Ind. Dear Friend Dan:! I can call you Dan because we've been friends for so long, and we write each other at least once every year, don't we? Your letter, just received yesterday, wherein you told me you would turn the key to the city over to me on Christmas Eve, surely was appreciated. You say Henry Vis, the Building Inspector, will hand it to me over in Robertsdale just as I land after sleighing across Lake Michigan, that'll be fine. Yes, Billy Bridge has already sent me plans showing the new streets and houses that have been added to your city in the last year, and George Blocki has promised to have the water running in Harrison Park so I can water my reindeers. In fact, Dan, I think I'm all set for my journey tomorrow night. My reindeer special of twenty-two sections is all complete. The first section of the Santa Claus Special, and also the last sled of the twenty-first section, is filled with home-made candies of every description from the Hammond Candy Co. There surely ought to be a lot of sweet girls and wives in Hammond during the holidays. Mr. Soulias and Mr. Rogers are responsible for my big load of sweets. My entire last section is made up of Jewelry from Sam Silver's, and Ladies Ready-to-Wear Goods that I got from the Weserveu Ladies Shop. Say, it would do your big heart good to sec some of those articles, everything women like. Now, Dan, you asked me to remember the poor of your city, and to use your check which you enclosed. I'll tell you what I did : I turned your check and some other money I had received over to our mutual friend Ensign Hedegaard of the Salvation Army, who will take care of any poor family that I, in my hurry, might overlook. And in closing, Dan, I'm going to tell you this: I'm going to keep in touch with you throughout the next year, to aid you and your citizens as best I can, to make Hammond a bigger and better place in which to live. Good luck, and a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to all.
